Hey guys, wondered if I could get a little advice ...

I'm flying out to Canada next weekend for a cousin's wedding, as I'll definitely be doing a fair bit of driving out there - anything to watch / look out for?

Thanks in advance!

..... if you are around Calgary, Alberta, beware of the cops ..... they are hot on speed limits!! Make sure you stay awake on the long, long straight roads!!

You can turn right at red traffic lights unless it specifically tells you not to (unless you are on the Island of Montreal!).

You have to stop at the Stop signs. The cops wait by them to catch people that don't.

I drove about 3k through BC in August. I didn't really encounter anything out of the ordinary (other than the st hire car), it was all on highways though drink

Drove a hire car around Toronto, Niagara and on to Buffalo without any problems at all, just drive well and be extra aware obvious really but I got no advice from hire car people. Canadian drivers seem like a decent lot, no nutters encountered at all!

I think I am! Can't find the invitation, so I'll have to re-check the venue location ... As for the Ford Mustang, I think it goes without saying!

Evil Twin ... Hmmm ... Indian? 30? About 5'11 ? biggrin

Thanks again guys!

Don't get excited when you see speed limit signs that say 100 - they mean kph, not mph unfortunately!

Yeh se routine as normal. Just male sure you actually come to complete stop at stop signs and watch your speed. Oh and if you do get pulled stay in the car with your hands on the wheel and wait for them to come to you. If you don't you'll find yourself staring down a pistol.

Damn KPH limits!

Also Ben, thanks, as I tend to get pulled up here quite a bit, and I'm usually the first to step out of the car, not to cause any arguments, but to get the whole process over with quickly

Plus, engine off, keys on the dash, both driver's side windows down.

Oh, just ETA, some of the streets in the centre of Vancouver are one way, and typically of North American cities, the signage takes some getting used to, it's not glaringly obvious. I can tell you that the realisation that all 4-5 lanes of traffic are heading towards you is not nice . Cue a frantic u-turn .

Most people in Vancouver are a friendly bunch though, and generally pro-British, so you should be fine, even the police were nice when I was there. Never got pulled for not stopping at a STOP sign either.

My knowledge is limited to the drive from Vancouver Airport to Whistler, but the views were staggering!!

AND!

You can see the large wooden shack that featured in the A-Team movie!! It shamefully doesn't have a blue plaque or anything, so you have to keep an eye out for it 😉

watch out for the speed limits, they are in KPH and you will need to cough for the fine with the rental car company.
As others have said make sure you stop at stop signs, including 4 way stops. At 4 way stops the first person to arrive at the box is the first one to go. You can turn right against a redlight, unless it says you cant.
Also on multilane roads, you can drive in any lane, and even some 4 lane roads will have junctions from the meridian lane (would be the fast lane on UK Mway)

Thanks guys once again! I'm sure I'll have no problems when I'm out there, all the points have been noted - all I have to do is stick to them I suppose!

Unless I fancy a pistol in my face, getting pulled or being attacked by a bear, having a MAJOR problem on the 4 way stops and remembering that it's in KPH out there!
