Mk3 golf gti - can get one for about 500 these days
Honda civic coupe - mine is still going strong
Corsa 1.7 diesel ... Cheap motoring
always liked the jeep Cherokee but high petrol cost
Previous bangers of mine, rover 800 coupe 600 quid, lasted two years.
Pick unloved models in the range in bad colours, gold for example.
Although I am very tempted by the s type jags at the moment, getting really cheap .. But around two grand still.
Others I'd look at are Mazda 6 series, and Honda preludes.

I've had quite few cheap cars, from £80 upwards, and when you're buying cheap it's all about the condition of the vehicle so try not to fixate on getting a particular model of car too much if you can.
If you find a nice honest one-family car then buy it whatever it is, within reason of course. Don't buy a Kia Pride.
Happy hunting.
