Race to munich

so every year me and some mates head off for oktoberfest in Munich. this year we thought we would make it a little interesting by having a topgear style race.
me and my mate will be driving hopefully a 535D if i can source the right one in time, and they will be flying over and using public transport everywhere else.

any suggestions for the quickest routes and best times to leave. we normally leave wednesday evening and get to munich at 8-9am but this year pride is at stake lol.

martin thats the plan lol they will do it in roughly 6-7 hours

so i have to average 100mph lol i think the car will see the 155mph limiter quite abit on the autobahns haha

There's only one car to do this kind of journey in and that's a large Jaguar with a large engine.

i think the BMW 535D will be more than suitable hopefully giving me good top end with improved economy over a petrol hopefully meaning less stops at the pump. i am well aware its sad im excited about this and its over 5 months away haha

Wednesday evening would probably work - overnight is likely to be the best time to do it. The only way you can possibly do it is Autobahn all the way - so the route is pretty fixed really. Last time I did that run direct (on the way back anyway) we went through Stuttgart and Luxembourg but there's less than 30 miles in it.

thats my thinking ive been looking at the map and although there are a few parts you have to head north seemingly a long way im sure sticking to the one main road will be the quickest.
last year we left brighton at 7 and hit munich by 8 the next morning. this was 3 up being slightly mindful of my fuel economy and i mean slight i got 140mph out of my vectra 1.9 cdti which impressed me lol.

yeah i have to admit have spent some time on other forums maybe a little too long haha, if its any consolation i plan to make up for it and literally have a plethora of topics and posts before the weeks out.

on the documenting side i plan to video alot of it and hopefully edit it all together. also going to try and have at least two cameras on the car to capture anything good that happens.

so im wondering has anyone on here ever really pushed it from london to munich and how quick did they manage to get there?

Sounds like good fun. Enjoy the Oktoberfest, we went a couple of years back. Certainly potential to get very messy! While out in Munich, I'd recommend the BMW Museum, worthwhile visit for any BMW fanboi.

An alternative to using going in via Koln/Frankfurt (as per google maps) is from Namur head south through Luxembourg and to Saarbrucken. Use the 50km stretch of A road from Pirmasens to Landau (if you're pushing it that road is fantastic) and it will cut off a chunck of Autobahn.
Good luck in keeping your licence through Belgium though

Regardless of the route, I'd aim to be going through Belgium around 9 pm or so to get the most clear roads in Germany. I always used to aim to hit the German border at midnight

May I suggest to keep in line with the TG tradition that we need a live map in progress.

So...

Assuming at least 1 person in each party have a smart phone of some description can a Google earth/maps coordinates be posted up by each team say every hour of the journey so we can track the 'race' live.

Also an update on this thread by each team with any issues/events/challenges on the way.

Dave we were thinking of doing that but the update suggestion is very good. i believe you can get gps trackers apps for phones so will get them. we are hoping to build enough time into there journey so theoretically they should take the same time otherwise they will win hands down. this is how it looks so far.

Team flying
start worthing, west sussex
bus to local train station then train to gatwick 1.5 hours
check in time 2 hours
flight time 2 hours
baggage and exit munich airport 1 hour
munich airport to thalkirchen (camp site) 1-1.5 hours

so there total is around about 7.5-8 hours.

Team driving

start worthing to eurotunnel
calais to munich

est time via google maps is 12 hours.

i am trying to think of a way to even up the times so at least its interesting for both parties and would like to start at the same place at the same time.
i can only think of a country pub with very infrequent buses to train stations lol
