Yet another what car - 10k ish, mid sized...

Mate of mine is semi retired. He has a 5 year old Jag XJ which really only gets used for an occasional motorway run and his wife has a Yaris which he uses for most of their driving as they tend to do local stuff or going into town.
They thinking of selling both, getting one car whcih is probably focus sized, not much bigger, auto, reliable, and prestige enough for him to be able to use for turning up at meetings. I am guessing around 10K as they really dont drive much so seems a bit pointless spending more. Must be comfortable enough for the odd long motorway run.
I am thinking of maybe an Audi A4, I think the 6 is probably too big for his wife. Obviously a 3 series is on the list, mid sized mercs etc, but wondering if there is anything I am missing.
Can't see his wife having any interest in even a small 4x4.
Any inspiration from the PH massive?!
