I have just done a quick search on the forum on "HPI", having never ran one before, and all that comes up are horror story's of people that did not run their HPI checks until they purchased the car. I want to pre-empt that by running a full HPI check on a car that I left a deposit on over the weekend.

I know (from what I have seen in the documentation from VAG) that there is no finance outstanding on the vehicle, but what I want to check is car is not a CAT C/D etc, and if possible any claims on vehicle (not sure if this possible).

So who do you recommend for the most comprehensive, guaranteed, HPI check?

Thanks

You've named them about 4 times... HPI are the company! Go through them, it's more expensive (£20ish), but they provide a guarantee if their information is wrong.

The value of car checks (other than *what* they do/don't check) is the guarantee.

Most have a limit e.g. £5k for RAC (the last time I checked) etc. HPI is about £30k IIRC. HPI also have National Mileage Register info as well.

Basically, you get what you pay for.

I wouldn't bother with any of the cheap/text ones.

OK! I did not realize that - I thought HPI was the service!

I suppose a bit like Hoover/Vacuum Cleaner wink

So is it this place:- www.hpi.co.uk/ - The website looks like a dodgy rip off site!

You have to be careful to follow the T's & C's to be able to benefit from the guarantee though - paying through some traceable means, buying at the address on the V5 if it's a private sale etc.
