So this afternoon I was driving, family in tow to Ashford station.

Weather is lovely, and the road is a very wide, national speed limit single carriageway.

Ahead is a grey Megane doing around 50mph.

Two cars ahead a Fiesta indicates overtakes and pulls back in - absolutely no drama.

Ten seconds later the Merc in front of me does the same thing - but I see the rear of the Merc lit up by a aggressive flash of the Megane's headlights..

A little later I indicate and go around only to be given the full beam treatment.

As the next 3 cars go around him he does exactly the same thing - full beam once they have completed the overtake.

Every single overtake was perfectly fine - and didn't effect in any way the journey of the Megane yet he chose to display his displeasure at 6 cars in a row for having the temerity to overtake him.

At what point do you think this utter cock socket would begin the realise that "It's not them - it's me"

Or do you think that he honestly believes EVERYONE on the road is some sort of lunatic?

Why on earth do people think that overtaking is now some kind of illegal manoeuvre to which they have to demonstrate their objections?

The normal driver can no longer tell the difference between a good and a bad overtake and just classes them all as dangerous.

Sorry state of uk driving opinions

I would place a bet that the driver was 3000 years old and male?

Wait. Wait wait wait.... Wait.

You actually saw other people overtaking on a single carriage road?! GOOD LORD. Only get ever growing queues behind slow moving cars here.

The road was arrow straight - and you could probably get 4 abreast along it so none of the overtakes were even slightly remotely risky.

I was just astounded that he felt that ALL the cars overtaking him were somehow in the wrong. If it was one car I could have just put it down the the Megane driver being a little put out. But surely when six go around you in less than a minute you have to realise that you are the problem and not every single other driver on the road.

And around here. You get the funniest looks from BMW/Audi drivers as you overtake them and the person they are tootling along behind at 40 mph, on a long straight road, with clear visibility.

Makes me laugh smile

General public think: overtaker = speeder = crazy maniac = as bad as a paedophile.

I think another part of the issue in Britain is the perception that you are jumping the queue. If matey boy has to sit behind the slow moving truck for 5 miles, so should you. rolleyes

I was in Scotland at the weekend and on Monday had some brilliant overtaking fun through the twisties. Multiple cars dispatched and surprisingly no aggro or high beams.

Playing Devils Advocate here,
IF he flashed everyone, he may well be advising them it is safe to pull back in having cleared him a la lorry drivers

On the other hand...........

What a optimistic view of the world you have.

He wasn't. He was waiting until they had fully pulled back in and were off down the road before treating them to a 7 second display of how effective his full beam function was.

I'm from Ashford, just out of interest what road was it?

I'm gonna guess the A2070 ashford-brenzett road?

Can't say I've experienced getting flashed by people I have overtaken smile

I get this a lot, I never overtake unsafely and always with clear view. Often you'll also get flashed by oncoming cars when they're a good few hundred yards ahead also. Cocks.

I had a woman beep me the other day because she felt I pulled out infront of her at a mini roundabout. What actually happened was we both left at the same time and she drove over the roundabout turning right as I was driving around it.

I continue to be amazed at just how bad everyone else is on the road. I don't even think I'm all that great, no racing driver refelexes or the ability to hold the tail out when going round a sweeping bend, yet my 'average' seems to be several levels above everyone else?

Bring on the retests!

Some people hail from areas where 50mph limits are now the norm, I wouldn't be surprised if they have totally forgotten that nsl = 60mph.

Not saying that excuses their behavior, but in the mindset of the speed kills set its probably enough to trigger this sort of thing.

I had an argument with a guy at work once over what NSL limits were. He wouldn't back down despite my colleagues backing me. He was sure NSL was 50mph. I bought a highway code and showed it to him. He said it was wrong and we were all wrong......

Going back to the original post. I usually find these types are up your arse in the next village because you've slowed down for the limit when of course they just drive at their speed regardless of the limit, rain, snow etc etc

Experienced similar the other day, went past a car doing 40 on a nsl single carriageway, pulled in in front of him, and the guy coming the other way gave me the Wayne Carr sign, even though I tucked back into my lane well in advance, and could probably have taken the next slow driver without too much risk of hitting him.

I just think they're end of bells and carry on regardless. Some people can just drive round in their merry little world thinking the rest of us are the devil. Bloody do-gooders

Yep, I've had this happen a few times.

They start having a fit, flash their lights like a maniac and finish off with some sort of hand gesture. rolleyes

I always have enough time to repeat the light flash and hand gesture after safely completing my overtake with loads of space to spare.
