Merc & BMW Model/Chassis designation

I've wondered for a while now, as I have never followed the thought behind why BMW (take the 3 series for example) go from E21-E30-E36 etc etc.
Merc does the similar jumps in numbers with their model ranges.
Does any of these designations have any logic or meaning?
Audi for example,(in recent times at least) A4 = B5/B6/B7/B8, that follows some logic in Model designation.
Can't work out the other 2.
Anyone know?
