Looking to get my GF a car.
Looking for something under £4k
Must average 30mpg,
be reasonable to tax,
and at most 8 seconds to 60.

Been looking at Glanza V's which seem to fit the criteria, but would like some alternatives to consider.

Cheers

Well I am in full BMW mode right now, so I am going to recommend an E46 330i.

I have an E46 328i, and it does over 40 mpg on a run and around 25-30 in town / when you cane it. I would imagine the 330i would be about the same.

Brilliant cars smile

If you are going to go for a straight 6, you might as well go for the biggest you can afford as they all drink the same, and cost pretty much the same to insure smile

I'd imagine that almost any hot hatch of that size will average 30mpg and most of the next size up will these days too.

Or how about something like an MR2; or does she need four seats?

As above, MR2 roadster as it is pretty nippy with a 0-60 of 7.9sec, great handling and very economical, easily 35mpg and a bit of a looker.

As an example: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Also if that doesn't fit then how about a Clio 182? Sporty, 35mpg at a push and a great all rounder! I have watched the 182 run rings around bigger more powerful cars at the track.

Currently averaging 35mpg out of my 53 plate Leon Cupra R, remapped to 265bhp. Would guess that 0-60 is closer to 6 seconds.

£215 a year for the MR2 and £250 a year for the Clio. Not the greatest as my WRX is only £260 but you won't get 30mpg out of it, probably 28mpg at best.
