I have two cars. One a petrol V8, the other a 4x4 with a 3.0 diesel. Both occupy the highest rate tax bracket.

The petrol V8 does 4000 miles a year. The diesel around 6000 miles a year.

The 'tree hugger' in the family implies I am helping to ruin the planet...

Why can't people just live and let live. I like my cars!

Ask the tree-hugger how much tax she paid last year, and how much of that has gone to ridiculous government schemes like windpower.

Why not compare your total emissions from two polluting cars but with low mileage against the environmentalist's total. It doesn't take a lot of extra miles in a borebox to match or exceed your contribution.

Tell the tree hugger that to manufacture a new car (use a Prius as an example) will use more energy than it would take to run one of your cars for a very, very long time.

I like that logic smile

Also ask them if they know only 20% of the UK's man-made co2 emissions is from road travel. Then ask if they knows the UK only makes up 2% of the World's total man-made co2 emissions and then ask them to calculate exactly how much your 10,000 miles contributes to that.

Then tell him/her to shut up smile

The 'tree hugger' is a bloke.....shock!

I just find the whole thing rather irritating quite frankly.

How do these people think their food gets to the supermarket?

I had one of these tell me I was a barstard for not cycling to work.

I showed her my annual mileage and calculated how much bad stuff I am responsible for, compared to a flight she took to america. That shut her up.

I didn't mention I fly abroad 5 or more times a year, of course. biggrin

You should be ashamed of yourself!
It's obviously your duty to drive the most boring eco-box you can buy brand new from the dealer!
Nevermind the fact that the UK's cars as a whole have pretty much no effect on the climate.
