Yaris vs Evoque....?

Sat at my desk this morning, looking out the office window, and I noticed two cars parked across the street as per the photo (apologies, taken through poncy London smoked glass with a crappy 'phone camera) below...

Now I happen to like the styling of the Evoque very much, and I'm even considering one for Mrs HH's next car. But, and it's a big but, just how small are they for the money? The picture shows a 3dr Yaris parked alongside a 5dr Evoque and I was amazed at how much less the difference in size was versus my pre-(miss?)conception.

OK, probably been commented on before, but the comparison in the flesh really emphesised the point I feel.

As an aside, whilst I'm sat in the middle of London, the cars are actually 'offically' parked in Cambridgshire.

They are very small, I saw one parked next to a Polo and there wasn't anywhere near as much as I was expecting in it.

My mate's Mum is getting one very soon, so will see what they are actually like when it arrives!

Besides that, I know there is a pink used one on eBay for £44k... wink

They are not much bigger than a Golf in terms of overall length but are quite tall, which 'chunky' futuristic styling all adding to the feeling of it being a large car.

If you want to see large, check out a Range Rover Vogue or the new Land Cruiser 4.5 V8 Diesel.

The thought of paying £40k upwards for a 2l deisel which is shorter than a ford focus doesnt really appeal to me I must say.

LR must be laughing their heads off!

The 3 door is very small. And because of the electric seats, a real barsteward to get into the back seats in heavy rain.

I loved the images of the evoque when launched, and was seriously tempted to buy one.

When i saw the size of it in the flesh it was a non-starter. It should be freelander size, not golf size.

good observation and photo OP!

Very small – especially bearing in mind it’s got a Range Rover badge on it.
I test drove one a while back.

It’s a great little hot hatch, with Hotwheels(TM) oversized wheels on a small frame.

It’s a cracking little car.
But, the important word in that description is ‘little’.

Same here, we'd considered it for the OH's car until we saw the size - with a dog, a 1 year old and all the associated junk to cart about it simply wasn't big enough when considering the asking price.

We'd looked at the Freelander and SWMBO didn't like the interior styling, we'd thought the Evoque might be the answer for her, sadly not.

Sorry if I'm missing an obvious joke but what's this business about them being parked in Cambridgeshire? When I first read it I thought maybe they're across a county boundary or something to avoid the congestion charge but of course there are several counties between Cambridgeshire and London.

Totally agreed. Freelander interior is low rent for £40k car.

2 kids + baby on the way, 2 dogs. We ended up buying a Mercedes ML. I was rather surprised to find out an ML is narrower externally than a Freelander!

Its one of those cars that you see in pictures and think its massive. Then you see one for real and realise how kinda dainty it looks.

Also, I think it looks massive from the back. Then you get round the front and it appears quite small.

I was wondering... Something to do with Royals, perhaps??? Or the Government? I'm confused.

I thought Freelanders were priced around £30k? It's a bit irrelevant to say that they are "low rent for £40k car" in that case.

That's certainly interesting. I did see an Evoque being followed by a RR Sport and something looked odd but I couldn't put my finger on it. I guess it is the size thing. So the Evoque is not a replacement for the Freelander? Dunno why I thought it was. I guess it is to rival the likes of the Rav4?

Hi it is freelander size its based on the same chassis. Also remember as a taller car you sit more upright in it.

I have a disco and its shorter than a Volvo estate, but my mate (who owns the Volvo) moans there is more leg room in the back of mine. There actually isn't its perception as he sits more upright so his legs are not so far forward.

The wife likes them, but there is now a 12 month waiting list, that put her off smile

It's Ely Place, just off Holborn Circus, where Ely Palace once was - this was historically the London residence of the Bishops of Ely.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ely_Place

I believe it was once formally part of Cambridgshire, and locals like to continue that story, but I'm sure it is now officially part of the London Borough of Camden, although I'm not sure why it's still gated. The barman in Ye Old Mitre (a famous very old pub hidden away down an alley off Ely Place) will tell you that if you're a naughty boy and you're being chased by the Met or CoLP, you can run in there and they can't follow as they don't have jurisdiction. Utter tosh of course, but a nice tale to tell over a pint.

Anyway....as you were.....

I'm a bit sad, and I quite like stuff like that. Also, the fact that there is a pub there means it might be worth a visit. (Although it's proximity to Hatton Garden rules out a visit with the Missus.

I know - even though I'm a working class divorcee who couldn't afford to spend this kind of money on a car, each time I see one I look at the driver and think 'awww'.

The Evoque is almost claustrophobic in the back, especially the 2 door version. I sat in 2 and 4 door cars in my dealer a few weeks back now and was not impressed with the interior space at all. The roof felt too low and I doubt I could go more than 30 minutes as a rear seat passenger without feeling ill.

To me the car is a piece of "badge engineering" where the Chav and Cheshire brigade will run along to their dealer to buy one as it is a Range Rover.
