Not really a rant, more an observation.

Dropped into my local Esso station this morning for some fuel. There's a new notice sellotaped on all the pumps saying that due to a high number of fuel thefts all the pumps are restricted to give out a maximum of £30. As I was using "pay at pump" option I figured surely it wouldn't apply. After all I can't drive off without paying if my credit card details have already been taken, can I?

Well, it seems that's not how they think. Because when it got to over £25, the pump slowed and then stopped on exactly £30. "Fuelling Complete" appeared on the screen (which usually only appears when you replace the handle).

So I replaced the handle, put my card back in, re-entered my pin, and started over again. With the guy queuing behind me probably wondering what the hell I'm up to. It got to £30 again and it stopped, tank was still not full... but as the queues were starting to build up, I didn't do it a third time.

If I'm using "pay at pump" why the fk am I limited to £30? It's very annoying being rationed...

Either because they have to set the pumps to stop at £30 and cannot differentiate between pay at pump and normal deliveries, or because they really didn't think it through.

That’s very odd.

I only ever fill up my car when it’s on quarter tank, and I fill it up.
That £30 limit would really get on my nerves.
I’d just stop using that garage and go somewhere else.

(yes, I know there’s a mathematical thing that will explain that it’s more efficient to only fill up half way because of the weight of the fuel, but I don’t care.)

Hmm, say 25-30kg extra for a full tank in 1.5 tonnes? You would use more fuel wasting time sitting at the petrol station for each extra visit (IMHO), I have not done any sums.
