I am currently without a car following a rather severe engine collapse in my old focus.

Am running to a very low budget due to circumstances, but need something for getting about ASAP

I have a couple of options and was wanting to get opinions on here

1. Company are getting rid of an 07 plate Mondeo for about £400. 1.8 Duratec petrol but has 150k on the clock. FSH but not sure yet it it has had clutch, when belts were done. Needs front top mount and rear suspension is displaced. Also needs 2 new rims and 3 tyres. Has 2 months MOT and tax expires end of this month. Altogether I would approximate £7-800 to get sorted and on the road. I have heard reports of it cutting out but I took it home last weekend for an extended test and it ran with no problems

2. Merc C180 Elegance. 1997 R Reg. 1.8 Petrol with 115k on the clock and LPG conversion. 5 months tax and test. Not sure of history but it is a friend of a mate's family. Says he will take £500

Having driven the Mondeo it is nice and in pretty good condition but needs work. Saying that it will be a decent motor once the work is done.

However, I was offered the Merc last night and have to say I am leaning that way now. Merc reputation, lower mileage and running costs

Any thoughts or advice?

Cheers

The mondeo sounds like it needs a fair chunk of cash throwing at it to make it road legal. Of the two I'd take the Merc.

I would take the Merc, I own a 1998 C200 and have covered around 7000 trouble free miles it's quite economical, comfortable and goes well when you want it to.

As much as I like the Mondeo, out of these 2 the Mercedes sounds the better bet. Inspect it thoroughly for rust and check the gearbox properly (I assume it is an auto?). Besides that, these engines run forever.

With the Mondeo, depending on how it has been treated, you might be looking at a clutch and DMF replacement soon along with the rear subframe bushes which would probably set you back over a grand. I assume it is a mk3? Tread carefully with that one.

Merc with LPG for £500 - as long as it's working and tidy - bite his arm off !

Buy the Mondeo, get it on the road, and flog it.

Even with 150k it should make considerably more than the £1,200 it will stand you - at £2k you can then go and buy the Merc with the change.

^This. Buy both now while they're available and make a few quid in the process.

Sort of...

Buy 'em both, get them both up to sensible condition, then decide what to keep. Whatever you sell the other for, should pay for the one you keep...

Am I seeing this right, a 2007 plate Mondeo for £400?

If you don't want it I'll have it.

Frankly I can't see much between them. Either could land you with a big bill at any time. Can't help thinking the Ford might be cheaper to fix ....... if it's worth fixing at all.
