I like to be able to compare things numberically, so came up with the following test of how committed someone is to barge motoring. The barge commitment ratio.

BCR = (annual fuel cost / market value of car) * engine capacity (l).

Anything above 4 makes you a committed bargeophile.

My 12k p.a. Jag comes in at 7.8. I'm sure this can be bettered by the denizens of PH.

I like the equation. However, my barge cost me quite a bit and even though I now use it as my daily driver, I let the side down by getting the 3.0 engine (I'm still looking for a 5.6), so I get a really poor barge commitment ratio, even though I love my barge and don't want to part with it (except of course for one with a bigger engine).

If I buy another one and have two does that help?

3.0.

Hmm. Needs more displacement. And it's not really a barge. It just runs 85 profile tyres and feels like it hehe

I'm getting about 1.5 - not a lot of miles.

Another E39 540i, but I'm getting a ratio of 8.2.

What do I win? I hope it's petrol vouchers.

You win the chance to nod sagely at A lex in appreciation of his barging prowess.

But 8.2 is a very good score in it's own right. You win a raised eyebrow.

The Triumph scores 12!! Based on annual fuel costs of £4800/£800 market value multiplied by the 2 litre engine.

(£1400/£600)x3.5=8.166666666666 [E34 535i]

(£1647/£300)x1.3=7.137 (or 12.627 if we use the taxable capacity of 2.3 for the 13B wankel) [RX7 FC]

(£1400/£50)x2=56 [E30 320] Blimey.

How marvellous - have a huge soft spot for the Mk II Triumphs, but it's been months seen I've seen one. Dad used to have a red 2.5PI which was our family motor for many years.

Somewhere between 3.5 and 6 for me, depending on how many miles I end up barging this year. 5.6L V8 FTW!

My diesel S40 gets a 2.4 which isn't too bad I guess considering it isn't exactly a barge.

5.6 with a 728 E38 barge ... costs for servicing, repairs and tyres now at £75 per month over 3 years, depreciation at £16 per month over same period. Like.
