Odd one, this. Wanted to know if anyone else did the same.

Bought an E36 M3 cab just under 2 months ago. Really lovely car, 2 owners, FSH, lots of options etc. Needed a service, front tyre and the rear window was a bit milky. All of which I factored into the very reasonable sale price.

Although, in the past 2 weeks I've ended up replacing the VANOS unit because one of the solenoids had gone, service ended up being an Insp. 2 and, what with a few other bits and tyres I've spent 2 grand on it.

To be fair, it now drives sublimely. Everything works exactly as it should, engine is quiet and smooth and it's ridiculously sprightly at full chat.

But now I end up in the classifieds looking at other cars I could have had, where I could have spent the six grand my car now owes me, etc... Despite the fact that, clearly, the other cars aren't perfect either.

Do I think too much?

It's understandable to feel like that if you've just paid out £2k to fix these points, however it should be tempered by the reasonable purchase price. It's likely that any of the other cars you were considering could sting you for a similar amount of (un)budgeted expenditure.

It now sounds like you have a sorted expample of a highly regarded car. I'd get out there and drive it so you feel you're getting the benefit of the £2k service/repair cost.

Enjoy driving

Thanks thumbup I tried the driving bit today coming back from Somerset, but it was just a procession of Sunday drivers.

I suppose the point is that, as Petrolheads, we have very high standards about how the car should perform/look which most other motorists don't share therefore very few cars are likely to be spot on straight away.

ETA- I'm taking quite masochistic delight in actually properly updating the blog to reflect how much I've spent on the car...

Scary.

Your very lucky to own a nice example though , and with those issues rectified you can rest assured that there shouldnt be anymore scares on the horizon.

Happy Hooning.

The way I see it is,

Your P&J is to someone else just another old BMW. To another, it's their 'ultimate car'. Enjoy it for what it is. The smile from driving it should hopefully erase that £2k cost. If it doesn't.. perhaps think about selling it and for ever driving around in £300 scrappers. Life is too short to worry about 'could have beens'... trust me on this and looking in the classifieds is one sure way of taking the gloss off any recent purchase.

You've spent the money now, put it behind you and get out and enjoy it. £2000 right now sounds like a lot of money, but in years to come the smooth running and reliability of the car due to your investment will seem like money well spent.

I've just experienced this... but luckily I didn't buy the car.

I went to see a 968 for £10k and whilst at the dealers I saw an E46 M3 cab for the same price and it confirmed what I thought that I must have been mad to consider buying a much older, much slower car for the same price.
