Sounding fast, going slow.

Saw a bloke in a yellow Ferrari F430 spider driving through Southport yesterday. He was tootling in traffic doing about 15mph, but the exhaust system he had made it sound ridiculously loud. Even at idle the car emitted a big, bassy note that frankly made the car seem totally stupid.
Any clues why a car like that should have such an overblown exhaust note? Was it broken? Did it have a tubi exhaust, or do tubi ones sound relatively normal?
Why do people fit such silly exhausts? I know why 19 year olds fit them to their Corsa C's - they want to be as sporty as the insurance man will let them, but surely a yellow, convertible, mid-engined Ferrari is asking for enough attention to not need an exhaust that made it sound totally silly?
I just don't get it.

In response to 'why do people fit such silly exhausts?' What one thinks is silly another may feel is a worthwhile upgrade to their pride and joy or possibly cheaper than an OEM replacement. I quite fancy an upgraded exhaust on my car, not for the noise but for the extra flexibility and torque offered with it being a turbocharged engine. Plus the vehicle manufacturer offers it as a dealer option, it's pretty refined as well. Not wanting to compare a hot hatch to a Ferrari too much though.Any clues why a car like that should have such an overblown exhaust note? Was it broken? In my limited experience of standing close by and admiring the V8 Ferraris aren't the quietest of cars as standard.

That's just it. It didn't - it sounded over the top. I'm sure a stock exhaust sounds better.
Over the top to you is quiet to another. Some people like their cars to sound like touring cars, others like them quiet and stealthy. Different cars have different characters. A quiet Impreza would be disappointing, an extremely loud Jag XJ would be similarly inappropriate. Horses for courses.Oh, if it was super loud, then it's probable that it was decatted and had no silencers, just a straight pipe exhaust. I know from experience that a Civic Type R for example, is 89db standard, 95db with an exhaust with no centre silencer and standard backbox, 105db with a straight through exhaust from the catback, and decatted, unsilenced exhaust and a sports manifold gives them a whopping 125db+. If The Ferrari was ridiculously loud then it's probable the exhaust pipes were a system only to get the exhaust gas away from the car, not to have any effect on the tone or volume shaping of the car's output. You are hearing the engine and nothing more.

See, this is it: I may be in the market for a replacement exhaust on the SL soon; and I don't want one that sounds rubbish, but the market dictates that if you want an aftermarket exhaust you must stink of brut, be from rochdale and have a walnut-hued fake tan!In my limited experience of standing close by and admiring the V8 Ferraris aren't the quietest of cars as standard.

Get a custom made one then. Deleting or going for a smaller than OEM centre silencer will give your tone more bark or rasp, or a more "fruity" sound, as some would say. The size of the backbox(es) will alter the volume of the sound. Most aftermarket exhausts aren't actually all that extreme sounding, most are similar to the OEM system just with smaller silencers for a bit more volume, a more interesting tone and a nicer tip on the back for aesthetic purposes. Of course, there are some on the market, mainly for Japanese performance cars where rallying and N1 touring car racing has a fair fashion impact on the street cars that petrolheads drive, because rally and touring cars ain't quiet!
Scuds sound amazing, this one sounds so good when the valves open.

The one I'm referring to is the Miltek exhausts, they do a resonated version with the centre box for my car that isn't much louder than standard plus it has a lifetime warranty. Most after market exhausts for Ferraris come in several levels of noise output. Many people opt for the loud / loudest exhausts, only to sell them on and buy something a little more practical.
Personally, for a road car, I'd get one that was quiet / medium, as I find anything louder is a pain in the ears on journey of more than 30 mins.
