I had the use of a new fiesta zetec 1.4 recently and have to say it was actually fun to drive. The ride and refinement was excellent and although not quick it was nippy and fun to chuck around. Got me thinking in this age of high fuel/insurance costs and speed cameras, is something like an abarth 500/swift sport/twingo sport all the car you need on todays roads?

I have to admit I quite fancy a swift sport. Dont know why, its probably slower than my 320d never mind my elise but I think it would be fun biggrin

Swift Sport in one of the most fun mini hatches I've driven - think Saxo VTR/VTS that's been screwed together properly. Cheap too.

Recently, I've had a real want for an S1 106 Rallye. They just look like lots and lots of fun!

The Saxo's are a great budget warm hatch although a bit old now. The Twingo I thin is a great little car but I'd personally go for a used Clio 197/200 for the price of a new one.

I've always had a hankering for the Polo Gti, about 2000 era. Its kind of slow but think it would be well screwed together and reasonably nippy.
I just really like its looks.

We are tempted to go back to a cheap practical car and a little hot hatch again! Its great fun being able to drive somthing at the limit within the law wink

Panda 100hp is often quoted as a fun steer without being silly quick.

I really like the swift sport too. The new model has the 6 speed box and a bit more power, supposed to be great fun and handle very well. It's loaded with kit too (climate, xenons, ipod all standard). Not sure how well suzuki's are rated for reliability but being Japanese im sure they are pretty good. I do have a soft sport for abarth 500's though and the extra grunt of the turbo'd torque might edge it but both nice cars you could use every day and not worry about parking up anywhere.

My interpretation of a warm hatch was a Seat Ibiza TDI 100 Sport, remaped to 145.

So now I have a pretty quick car, for not a lot of money and it will still do 60mpg. Power steering is pretty awful, but other than that its a hoot to drive (for a diesel) and dead dead cheap to run
