Although slightly cheaper, the S3 has great build quality, although models are now getting a bit old in the tooth, meaning any repair / maintenance bills could be scary.
The exterior is now looking slightly dated, however the whole interior has great build quality and i love the red/black instrument cluster.

On the flip side, the Mk5 GTI is far newer (about 7 years), although slightly more expensive, but will be cheaper to run.
The exterior looks great, but the interior has a hint of 'cheap and flimsy' about it and am not a fan of the cluster.

What would you choose?

Luke.

1996 chassis or a 2004 chassis.

Let me think about that for a nano second...

Not quite, the original was regarding the newer mk2 s3. Good memory though!

I have a mk5 gti and it's alright, deffinately needs a remap as it's a bit slow but it handles well. I wouldn't let the lower priced examples fool you there are a lot of lemons out there. We started looking at the bottom end of the price scale and looked at 6cars getting more expensive before finally settling for a clean high mileage example £1000 dearer then the cheaper ones as we do 20k a year making paying a premium for lower miles pointless.
Personaly though I'd look at the fn2 civic type r or the mazca 3 mps for the same money I had a civic before and loved it just didn't want a civic and the mrs didn't like the look of the mazda.
As for the s3 I think they looked too dated to consider but I love the mk2's but it'd mean not buying a bike so was out of the question.
