What are your stupid/daft project ideas?

For the longest time I've been having recurring ideas for projects that I either would like to do or plan to do, but something prohibits it.

I started off with my Orion, which happily ended up being sold (it would have been an MCR chav special, but I was 17!)

Then I got the TVR which started off promising, bought the car, the engine and gearbox then lost my job!

Then there was the old 730 which I was going to stuff an M5 lump in at some point, but keep the body standard...then I blew the gearbox

The list goes on and on, but there's always a couple of ideas that tend to stay and never stray far from my thoughts

MX5 13B: Possibility for sure, but then I think about the next:

MX5 Small block Chevy: One of my faves, but it's sodding expensive...then I think about

MX5 200SX conversion: Then I think I should just buy an S13 200SX

Volvo 240/740 Turbo/V8: This one is always with me and I'm still not sure whether I should in a couple of years...either thinking redblock 2.3 turbo with internal upgrades plus SPD parts bringing up to about 300-350bhp, but the Chevy conversion costs about the same...

My latest stupid idea is a Mk4 Cortina on coilovers with a breathed on Zetec running ITB's...potentially a very stupid idea

Whether I'll do any of them is anybodies guess

Well im currently driving round in my stupid 2seater mondeo idea

but i keep getting an urge to build a twin engined Mondeo BUT using the 2.2ltr TDCi derv engines

I was part way through building a twin engined Peugeot Boxer a few years ago, using 2 2.7l V6s for Rover 827s. That would have been fun!

2 x 2.2TDCi engines? Will that not weigh about 4 tonnes?

I've got a Clio 182 at present. I fancy the engine will outlast the economical life of the other parts of the car, so perhaps I could find something interesting and light for the powerplant

For as long as I can remember I've wanted to put proper gullwing doors on a car.

I have a project in my garage which was originally intended as a track slag for which I've got most of the parts I need. Really it would be a shame to ruin the good panels on the thing and completely pointless but I can't get the urge out of my head.

The Hyundai Coupe uses a Mitsubishi engine, the same engine that is in the Evo only without the turbo. It'd be silly to just bung a 350hp Evo engine into a FWD coupe though, it should really be chopped up and have the whole AWD system fitted too.

Or mabye get one of these and put some numberplates on it:

That sounds like a right laugh!

Another idea I had was for a Ford KA6R2

Ford Ka, subframe with a Duratec V6, race cams, forged bits and a couple of turbos with power going straight to the rear wheels

Me: 944 with the Chevy LS1 (I think - the alloy-blocked one) engine. A conversion which has been done many, many times in the US but not in the UK (as far as I know.) And, if I'm being totally bonkers, I'd make it an estate version as well. (Yes, an estate 944. That has been done before too.)

Paint it metallic bronze. Tan leather interior with sports seats. Sensible boot space. Sublime handling. Very decent (although not ultimate) performance, with reasonable economy.

(I'm now wondering what I am waiting for! Oh, the money to do it ... )

My 'rainy day' project is to see whether you can use a model aircraft jet engine to run the hot-side of a turbo so that you can set a constant boost for lag free driving. It's been done using a Helo APU on a hill climb car, but I reckon one of those modern model jets would give you enough CFM and be a chunk simpler to install and a hell of a lot lighter.

My crazy ideas:

-V8 converted TR7 - done (never finished but done and working)
-highly modded turbo powered Series III Land Rover (in progress should be complete by the summer)
-ratted '86 T-Bird - got the engine and the car, just needs a gearbox and some work doing to it


Future potential projects:

-Re-do my Camaro with better brakes, suspension and a minimum of 500hp with some nice styling mods. This is sort of in progress but a long term project that I'll attack with more vigor in a few years
-Land Rover 127FC 8x8 - yep an 8wd monster powered by a Tdi motor made from Landy bits
-T-series turbo powered pick Discovery built for fast road use
-VVC powered Rover 100
-Celica 2.0 engine powered Rav4 (gen 1, 3 door)
-some sort of diesel powered Caterham like kit car

For quite a while now I have wanted to put a Fiat Uno Turbo engine in a very standard looking Fiat Cinquecento Sporting.

Not an original idea as it has been done. Not an easy swap either though, hence why I've never done it.

The 1.4 16v conversion from the Panda HP100/Stilo is an easier swap and putting out nearly the same BHP as the Uno Turbo in standard form.

One day, it will happen. Need to learn to weld first.

I've got a solid, but somewhat unloved three door mk2 Golf sitting in the garage. I also have a Syncro tunnel, propshaft and rear beam sitting in the aforementioned garage. My plans keep on changing, so far I've considered:

VR6 Turbo with Haldex
20vT with Haldex
SR20DET front-engined RWD
YB front-engined RWD
Rear engined VR6 Turbo

I guess the first two aren't particularly mad, as they've been done many times, but the others are a bit different (rear-engined VR6 has been done before as well).

Peugeot 306, BOB engine in the front, mounted to a type 9 box and running to a jag rear axle. Fully spaceframed and covered with a nice Dimma kit.

Nope, but I have enthusiasm

The MX5 was the closest I got as I began changing and uprating bits and pieces, but someone with a mint CBR1000 wanted to do a straight swap...the MX5 was a Cat C write off and was tatty at best, so I jumped at the idea.

From then on I've not been in a position to do, nor will I be for a couple of years, but the cogs keep turning.

I have been given an XJ Cherokee 2.5TD which will be going on the road at the end of the year, but nothing mad planned for that other than a 3" lift and make it look a little meaner
