I'm thinking of getting a celica, 2001/2ish, 190bhp.

Rules are half decent to drive, 35ish mpg, can fit 2 kids in the back if needs be(only small so if there's seats that'll do!).

I leaning towards a celica 190 or octavia vrs(2002ish).

What should I look out for on the celica? Or any other suggestions?

I think the general concensus on the celica is to avoid the Pre-facelift 140hp (non-lift) engines as they have oil issues which need extra attention. However, the vvtl-i and all facelift variants are ok.

celica was on the short list before getting my 330, firstly its a jap coupe and got a lift in one to town one evening and had to sit sideways in the back and im only 5'9, the guy enjoyed it though and he had an M3 before so couldnt of been a bad car!however quick research suggested there was a serious known issue with the yamaha developed engines which i think was a weak head gasket (though dont quote me) and possible gearbox issues but again dont quote me. that aside they seemed to be considered very similar to the honda integra type r

Friend has a remapped vrs, far better family car in every way. running around 210bhp its certainly shifted and was only slightly slower than my 330. i liked the look of it inside and out (for the money anyway) only downside is the seats were cream/white in the middle and im sure kids could dirty that with little effort smile

Could you get a decent ST220 for that?

but not with 35+MPG on a decent run also not sure i'm cut out for a mondeo.

Its only a second car that I'd use to drive to work in and about twice a month have to stick the nippers in. I know the early 140bhp celicas have issues with loss of compression/burning oil. Just wondering what's the issues on the 190bhp ones?

With either choice I don't mind getting a car that's 100-120k miles on it.

A friends corolla with the same engine does 37.2mpg on my 90mile commute. Its not a 8500rpm journey.

Pre-2003 190s have a problem with Lift bolts. http://www.celica.talktalk.net/liftbolts.htm

I'm 6ft and sat in the back of my own car and the only problem is my head hitting the roof, just tell the guys in front to sacrifice their own legs! I do when I squeeze in 2 at the back!

Celicas are brilliant cars. Just make sure a pre-facelift one has had the liftbolts changed, or if not, that it revs cleanly and delivers power to the redline. I had one that hadn't had the lift bolts changed and it was fine - I think the consensus is that they can break, but if they haven't so far then the chances are they won't. It'll take miles upto 150k with no problems assuming its been taken care of. They are brilliant value. Kids in the back will be fine.

We Fit 2 kids, aged 10 & 12 in the back ok, but it's not overly generous and they would want to go on a massive journey in it.... On the upside it makes them keep it tidy!

On prefacelift 140's I think the key is regular, quality oil & filter changes and engine flushes

Ooops, I maintain the pre-facelift Celica is better than the post because it looks better (subjective I guess) and the later ones have some kind of stupid 'my first car stereo' Playschool stereo system. Otherwise there's not much difference so far as I'm aware aside from the details of the engine mechanicals.

Who said i bounce it of the limiter everywhere i go ,iv had the car 18months and even sat 74mph its between 8-9 litre/km (29-26mpg),reading of the trip when i had it.

i used to do manchester to birmingham each week at circa 60mph in friday rush time and even then it was circa 30mpg

Can't speak for the Celica, but if you're considering a vRS, take a look (if you haven't already) at an early SEAT Leon Cupra 1.8 20vT 180 too?

Not at all, it spends its time between 2-5k and I use whatever 97-99 octane petrol I can pay at the pump for.
same here id say between 2-4.5k in the week tops as i dont go anywhere until the weekends ,still 28mpg.
Even giving it death its onlly 24mpg ,its good to take it to the redline atleast once a week otherwise the ocr valve will clog

The stuff repeated here about the weaknesses of the 140 are taken out of context. Toyota are the largest vehicle manufacturer in the world by a big margin, there are millions of celicas and a few have had oil problems and this is usually on cars that arent maintained to the schedule. I have a 140 and it has no issues at all because I look after it as directed by the manufacturer.

The 190 is much shorter geared than the 140 to get more performance, so motorways especially you'll notice higher rpm and lower mpg but its still not a petrol hungry machine.

As a car its great, I have kids and adults in the back of mine often enough and as long as the front seats are adjusted reasonably there is no prob (very well proportioned if you compare it with CLK, integra, or other 2+2 coupes).

If that's all you're getting it seems to have something not quite right. Everyother owner I've spoken to says 35mpg minimum, more like 38 on a sub 5000rpm commute.

Indeed... 40+ is achieveable in mine on a steady run. Did 250 miles to Cambridge and back in it at the weekend at .8 - .9 leptons - still returned high thirties.

I did think about them but they don't really appeal for some reason.

I used to get 35 mpg on my ten mile commute in my Corolla 190. Also had just over 40mpg on a trip to south wales, doing 75-80 all the way with 4 of us in the car and a boot full of beer!

MPG was very good for the performance. Awesome engine, just a tad buzzy pushing over 3500-4000rpm at motorway speeds.
