I have often wondered why this kind of thing never caught on.
The way I thought of doing it would be to have four smaller wheels perpendicular to the normal wheels but raised up (think of the way the wheels on the DeLorean folded up in Back To The Future when it needed to fly)
You'd pull up exactly next to the space you wanted to park in, and then lower the wheels which would lift the car slightly, and you could then just "crabwalk" sideways into the space.
You'd never need more than a car's length of space to park in then :P
