I've searched to see if this has already been discussed, but I cant see anything.

I had my car MOT'd this morning and the guy at the test station said that they no longer give out certificates. I was pretty surprised.

I like to keep my certs to show mileage year on year etc, but all he did was give me a print out which he said they are not requred to do.

So, how does the layperson check when their MOT is up? What is stopping someone replicating the A4 printed bit of paper I've just been give?

I'm not convinced there's enough information around on this and while I get it will all be centrally stored on a computer somewhere, I think its a step backwards for Joe Public....i guess in the name of saving money.

It's been covered, written about, moaned about and disputed ad infinitum on here. You're a bit late coming to the party.

How does the layperson check when their MOT is up? Check the printout, put a note in your diary, put an annoying sticker on your windscreen.

What is stopping someone replicating the A4 printed bit of paper I've just been give?
Nothing. But a buyer could call the garage or check the DVLA website.
Fake MOT certs are nothing new.

I wouldn’t be surprised if before long (if not already) an HPI check will give the MOT end date too.

You should get a black and white A4 printout.
Agreed i think it's a bit daft, if you were selling to someone without internet access the could easily be conned. Big fan of the online, but surely a proper 'safe' document should still be given.
Mind you most insurance companies don't give a certificate either these days.

PS if you go online and enter the document reference number form the V5 you can download MOT history, from 2005 i think.

Isn't there a system where you can ask them to send you a text message to remind you??

They used to give me a pisce a paper after my MOT. Now they give me a piece of paper after my MOT. So I'm not sure very much has changed in reality.

I'm sure they haven't discontinued the certificate system yet - they should give you an A4 sheet confirmation at minimum.

I can't stand the ste looking things either. Costs are up for the MOT centre too as they have to buy their cartridges from VOSA or whatever at extortionate rates.

That's nifty. Again though, other than being on PH, I wouldn't know about this.

OK, seems I've missed the fun. Coming late to the party....I like to make an entrance, y'know... smile

Not sure, they did ask if I wanted reminding so perhaps that's part of the change. Yeah, I did get a bit of paper but its not as pretty as the ones I used to get. Easy to misplace IMO.

Yeah, I got that but it could easily get lost, misplaced etc. I think the past MOT's were at least distinctive and you knew they were important....now it's just like any other piece of paper.

Everything is on a database that you can check online, all you need is the mot ref number or the V5 number, if you dont have a web access puone simply ask the vendor for the MOT number before you leave to veiw the vehical wink
Simples
As for when it runs out, got a calender on you phone? it will have reminders you can set or do it the old way and put a mark on the paper calender on the wall? or even easyer just file it somewhere safe and check it like you used to do with the old paper ones ?

Ok so it's a peice of white paper, put it with the old papers ones?
really i do think people try harder to look sfor something to maon about than they do looking for a solution laugh

I like it, because the list of advisories can't go missing!

Anyone had their vehicle MOT'd and then immediately tried to get car tax at the post office?... Um. Good luck with that.

Worst thing is they put down a load of advisories for my Discovery. When it failed there were four or five, now they've filled the sheet at retest. Out of order I think - it passed or it didn't. Shyte like "radius arm bush rubber has detoriorated but is not resulting in excessive movement" FFS, it's like a work generator for them now.

Also, it failed at 'Quick Seizure' on park brake efficiency 44%. Took it to a 4x4 place for repair and they did a dyno or decelero-whatever test at 20mph and it was 68%. Cost me two days thanks to 'them' not knowing how test the brakes on a 4x4. Bloke tried to explain it to the MOT tester, in the end I had to threaten to raise an MOT fail appeal with VOSA.

I had my MOT retest yesterday (failed initially due to a substandard tyre repair which seemingly passed an MOT just before I purchased the car and also not picked up during a 111 OPC check) and when I got home after the test I was just about to phone to test centre as I thought they'd failed to give me a new MOT certificate before I spotted that the black and White printout was actually the certificate...

According to my MOT man, the unscrupulous Pritt Stick a little piece of blank paper over the advisories and photocopy the sheet. Hey presto, MOT pass without advisories! Best to check online for advisories!

Don't mind the new Cert. Can't see how the OP finds it easy to misplace. Just put it in the same folder you used to put your MOT's certs?!

The Northern Ireland system is king. Council run centres to ensure uniformity, and mot disks to display in the windscreen. Very easy for PC plod to check without a computer search.

+1
it's the information on the paper that matters not how pretty it looks!
