Its too Fat! Whats my best option?

It appears my car is too fat for the trailer I've just bought for it (i did measure it!).

It is literally only a tiny bit, and the tyres sit onto of a raised bit of ironwork, which I'm assuming is not good for the tyres?





Im thinking of just getting rid of that ridge, and just making it nice and smooth.

The tyre might overhand the tinniest amount then, but as long as its anchored nice and tight, its not exactly going to fall off.

Anyone got any better ideas?

if it's like that both sides, it looks fine to me!

I'd be worried about cutting that off as it may affect the structural integrity, I may be wrong though

Can't you bend the lip out a bit, just where the tyres sit?

I'd much rather leave it like that than remove the ridge, although you might not harm it too much if you just cut or bent out a sort of elongated half-moon section for each tyre? I'd probably leave it as it is, though.

cant you just slightly bend the section by the tyre outwards a little bit so it doesnt dig in your tyre

If you measured it, why did you buy it? It's too narrow!

Could you get some cheap, narrow steel wheels and and some secondhand tyres to roll the car around on?

1 Buy a new tape measure, yours is broken.
2 Pay a man with a welder some money to adjust the trailer.

3 Lump hammer – just bash the edge of the trailer until it’s angled outwards and doesn’t effect the tyres.

4 Thinner wheels for transport – although that might be a hassle.

You could slip a piece of wood in the space under the tyre just before and after to fill the space and raise the height to match the lip. That would be quite straight forward.

Or cut / bend / hammer the section next to the tyre outwards at 45 degrees or something like that to keep the lip.

if you put a batton on the runner to raise it up an inch the tyre will sit more flush but still have some resistance against the side, the tyre straps will keep it in place anyway.

I think bending that lip out to 45 degrees with a large set of pliers or hammer would be fine. You can leave the centre section vertical, it only needs to be widened where the wheels are going to sit during transport.

As others have said, bend that bit outwards. A big adjustable spanner is very handy for this and tends to give a neater bend than thwacking it with a hammer! If you have access to a blowtorch, getting it glowing nice and hot will make it easier too.



Whatever you do don't cut any metal off- all the strength is in that vertical section.

I knew i asked on here for a reason.

I will try giving it a few bashed with the lump hammer and see how easy it bends, but it is rather thick steel.

If not i will just place some batton on there, nice and simple.

Oh, and yes my measuring skills are not the best

Yes, buy four cheap space saver wheels and use them as rollers. The car will fit on the trailer without rubbing and itll be easier to push around off the trailer too.

As an example 4x MX-5 wheels would cost £40.

I do actually have a set of thinner alloys that would probably do the job, but i just don't really want the hassle of keep changing tyres.
