Untaxed Vehicle Thought Police?
Discussion
Just sitting having breakfast and a white van with DVLA markings drives into our small cul-de-sac (too quickly!).
A bit odd, I think, so I go to the door and see him pulling up next to my daughter's car. Bloke goes round to the windscreen.
"Is there a problem?" I ask - "It's come up as untaxed" he says in a rather aggressive manner. "Well, it's not" I tell him, by now getting a bit pissed at him - It's early.
He checks and sees the new tax disc (It was SORN before and on our drive, but is now taxed and sitting on the road). "Oh, well it shows on the database as untaxed"... he's a bit less full of himself now.
"Well, you can see it is" - I reply - He leaves.
Now, seems a bit odd that they would appear in our quiet road without some cause - Would a nosey neighbour have had to tip them off? I've never seen a van like this before.
Also, what kind of crap computer system do they have where you can tax a car online, get the disc in your hand and in the windscreen and the investigators "database" still reports the car as untaxed?

Assuming it was actually the police and not a scam, no not necessarily a neighbour, you daughter probably got caught by an ANPR camera.
You can check the tax status at direct.gov.uk/taxdisc you can expect some aggro if it's not showing on there.
Thanks - Shows as taxed there. You can check the tax status at direct.gov.uk/taxdisc you can expect some aggro if it's not showing on there.
As for 'just doing his job' - Maybe, but he was driving too fast in a residential area (I wouldn't have got up unless I noticed him howl into the road like a stuntman in the A-Team movie...) and them started off with a 'little Hitler' attitude - You don't HAVE to be a knob to do a job, do you? More to the point, it would appear that the computer doesn't say "No" at all!
The car wasn't used on the road before being taxed, I'm very honest like that

I think the problem is more the fact that he drove into their close like a w
ker, early on a Saturday morning, and was then brusque and discourteous.A few "Morning, I'm very sorry to disturb you but unfortunately.." and "I'm glad to see there's no problem here, I apologise for the mistake!"s go a very long way.
I completely sympathise with the OP here, but such is the way of the world these days.

Anything which means I don't have to pay for the laziness or apathy of others (insurance, road tax, etc.) is, IMO, a good thing.
Although I agree with McSam's sentiments above.

The same kind that meant that when I sent my driving license back to change my address a few weeks after having received it with fresh points on, it came back with no points on it at all. I ended up being banned from driving and was accused of sending them an old license! At least the second person I spoke to on the phone wasn't completely rude and admitted their fault, unlike the first one who told me I had to put my complaint in writing, all the while being banned from driving M.

Seems to me , if he'd been driving sensibly and not aggresive with you you would have seen his point of view, manners cost nothing, i'd have been annoyed as wellAs for 'just doing his job' - Maybe, but he was driving too fast in a residential area (I wouldn't have got up unless I noticed him howl into the road like a stuntman in the A-Team movie...) and them started off with a 'little Hitler' attitude - You don't HAVE to be a knob to do a job, do you? DVLA man probably gets s

The whole system around the taxing of vehicles and the number plates needs making a whole lot more efficient. It won't happen while there are 1001 different bands and our public sector running it.

Why do we even pay "vehicle excise tax" anyhow?
What is it justified by?

+1 It doesn't take much to get you on side. but as someone said he will get s
t from the usual scrotes that drive un-taxed all day long. still I must have been obvious that the OP was just coming out to see what was up. rather than bringing the entire tracksuit wearing family to shout and ball in the street at him. VR

The issue is which is easier to fake up? A paper disc or an entry on a database?
Exactly - why don't they just refer to the correct database or send a letter or something? Say the car wasn't taxed, what would he have done then? Just driven back and collected his commission I assume. Seems an expensive workaround for a s
t secondary database to me!Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
