Hi All,

I'm filling out the insurance quote form on compare the market and have been asked this question when filling out the accidents bit:

Claim made under your insurance - yes/no

The accident I am reporting was a non-fault claim. Another driver hit my car so I phoned my insurers and they put me in touch with another company/division that would claim off the other guys insurance.

I later received a letter saying the claim has been settled and my NCB has not been affected. I don't think I paid any excess. Presumably because the other persons insurance paid?

How do I need to answer the question?

Thanks.

You need to say yes. It should then ask you whose fault it was and the total amount paid out (which you need to know).

Unfortunately you will be penalised regardless of fault but it shouldn't be too heavy if this is your only one. My brother enquired about this very same thing. The insurers (when asked why they were charging him more) told him that 'statistically' he was more likely to be involved in another accident compared to someone that had never had a crash at all.

Not so. Some insurers charge extra for a non fault claim, some do not. To say he will be penalised isn't true, he might be.

Ultimately it doesn't matter, so long as he gets the cheapest premium. An insurance company might penalise him for the claim, but do his car or area lower, so they still come out best. Another may not penalise him for the claim, but charge extra for his age group. It's all irrelavent. Just put in the correct info and find the best quote.

IIRC the co. told me to put the claim in and then put it as non fault with a claim value as ZERO. It's zero as no payments were made from your policy but it was a claim made by you.

If I was you don't put the amount in if it was settled by the other insurance.

Don't get me wrong. I'm only talking a few quid here not hundreds for a non-fault.

But yes, best thing to do is just be honest. I wouldn't give any insurance company even the remotest possibility of finding something in the policy that may deem it void.

Yes declare it, this happened to me yesterday even though i had declared.

Well we have had our cars on an admiral multicar policy since Jan 2011, when we got it everything was declared all accidents etc we had been involved in.

The price was good so we renewed this year and now have the Juke and evoque insured with them.

However today 3 months into the policy we get a letter from them telling us they are going to take an extra £180 off us due to an undeclared incident. So i ring up and ask why?

Apparently its as a result of a non fault accident i had in March 2010 when some tit reversed into my scirocco. Firstly they have been told about this accident by my partner in 2011, its also should be on their records as at the time i was hit i was insured with elephant their sodding sister company and i went through the insurance at the time because it wasnt my sodding fault!!

Clearly they have made a balls up when quoting and now thing its ok 3 months into the current policy to just up the premium instead of just swallowing their mistake.

I am a bit annoyed to say the least!

Thanks everyone. I tried both answers out of curiosity and it came out cheapest by saying I had made a claim. Still a bit confused but it doesnt matter now anyway as moneysupermarket found a better quote than comparethemarket. Moneysupermarket has a much clearer way of doing it. Just a pity I won't get a meerkat now!
