I need a 7 seater to transport my tribe around.

Need to have big enough seats in the back for 3 car seats and a 15 year old and not a poor excuse for trying to be a MPV with crappy third row seats. Good on fuel blah blah blah.

im going to lease it.

any ideas?

I'd be going for a proper van if I were you, VW transporter/multivan

When I was looking at nearly new stuff 2 years ago* the SMax was the best of the bunch IMO although the rear row has limited head room so the Galaxy might suit you better. The seats are a bit firm, as is the ride quality but the 2.2 diesel we got was genuinely good to drive and surprisingly quick.

Since then the Discovery 4 has come out and the X5 has gained a row of seats so if comfort is more important than fuel economy and pace then these are worth a look.

But bear in mind the rear row will eat heavily into the boot space on all these options and if a double (or triple - how big was the mistake hehewink?) buggy is involved then a VW Transporter is worth a look.

*ie things might have changed.

New Sharan/Alhambra - the Alhambra will be cheaper and better equipped (although it's the same car) but dealerships are a little thinner on the ground.

Otherwise Chrysler have some good deals on the Grand Voyager but it will use more fuel than the Shalambra and the seating is a 2-2-3 configuration. The boot is much bigger than a Shalambra with all the seats up, however.

A Transporter/Caravelle/Viano will cost at least £5k more and be no more capable.

Not convinced. There'll be more boot space with the rear row in place (even before the LWB option is considered...) and the VW has better residuals.

What’s the budget?
Should we be talking about Fords or Mercs?

Audi Q7 has a third row of seats that are fairly spacious, and a big boot behind them.

I’m still none the wiser.
Does a £300 a month lease get you a brand new 60k car or a brand new 30k car?

Volvo XC 90.
Audi Q7.

Otherwise it’s going to be something like a Ford Galaxy or Citroen Picasso thing.
Some sort of big MPV – and as that point most PH lose interest because they all look the same and aren’t very exciting. wink

Likewise smile. There's not much boot space behind the rear row of a swb Caravelle unless you shift the rear row right forward, thereby reducing the space for the 15 yo. In fact, a Sharan with 6 seats deployed will have a much bigger boot and the 15 yo won't have to sit in the same row as his/her annoying younger siblings. The Chrysler GV will have even more room in the boot + more space for the 15 yo, but it is over 5m long, which makes it less easy to park. A lwb Caravelle would be even longer and parking-unfriendly.

A Caravelle costs £10k more than an equivalent spec Alhambra, a Transporter less so, but that's a van - ok for surfies/plasterers etc, less so for everyone else. So with a £10k price difference they'd have to have some bloody good leasing deals to compete with the Shalambra.

I suspect the OP will have to consult with the missus and look for himself, but my shortlist would be: Alhambra, Galaxy, Chrysler GV and the Caravelle only if you don't mind paying extra for the same thing.

How many miles?

£300 on a lease is not a lot if you do any sort of mileage.

I'd second the VW transporter. Given how bad every MPV I've been unfortunate enough to drive has been and how good vans are becoming. If I needed the space a proper small van would be the place to start, at least then you do get a decent amount of space.

I was in one on the autobahn between Hamburg and Hannover and it did the job nicely. 6 big blokes fitted fairly comfortably. Only downside is lack of storage in the back, things (OK, beer) were sliding around under the seats. Fuel capacity seems massive, or it's very economical
