My Mk3, 04-plate Ibiza FR is needing some new front boots, size 205/45 R16. I was never that impressed in the wet with the Bridgestones that it came with, they just seemed to spin with little provocation, even for a fwd car. When they wore out, I replaced them some slightly better and noticeably cheaper Yokohama S306s, which it's currently wearing.

I don't think the S306 is made anymore, so can anyone point me in the direction of some tyres that I should consider? I'm looking for a balance of cost against grip against noise. Longevity isn't a huge issue as I do pretty low mileage, and spend most of my time tootling along 30mph roads (but occasionally I'll get to "make progress" so I don't want any Ditchfinders!).

Thanks in advance. smile

Michelin Pilot Sport 3 probably don't meet your cost criteria but if you have to make an emergency stop in the rain you might regret getting something cheaper!

Falken 452 or Federal 595 decent alternatives mid range tyres.

I have the Yokohama Parada Spec 2's on mine. Dry grip is pretty impressive and the price not too bad at all. Prefer them to the Goodyear eagle F1's I had on before. Wear is probably slightly below average but I don't notice as I don't do too many miles. Only downside is I've known some people complain about their wet grip not being too great, but I've not noticed.

I have been nothing but happy with the performance of Bridgestone RE050A on my old Skoda - after having them recommended from a friend who used them on a SEAT Altea.

Those where in 225/40-18 and 225/45-17 sizes, but seing as the tyre wall will be similar on your 16" set-up I would recommend you take them into consideration.

I've got Rain Experts on the front of my 306, they are much better than the budget tyres they replaced.

I've had Toyo Proxes T1-Rs on my ZR and the ST, seem capable enough.

Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra

Did a fair bit of research for a well priced all rounder and these are probably the best tyre I have ever had on a car! Had loads of premium brands before, but the SAAB can put down its 250 horses, through the front wheels, in the wet with no hassle and the cornering, wet or dry is stunning!

Mine are 225/45/17 and were £80.00 per corner with a local ATS...

Edited to add - They can be a bit noisy or rougher roads, but I can live with that.

They are decent on some cars, but they are being replaced by the T1 Sport, so no point in getting the T1R.

Have run my Clio 172 Cup on T1-Rs since I bought it over two years ago, hillclimbed on them for a season too. Great tyres, just keep the pressures up as they have soft sidewalls.

Recently changed from Toyo T1-R's to Falken Ziex ZE-912 with no real differance except they're between £15-20 less per piece

This is on my 182

Another vote for the Rainsport2s. I have them on my Ibiza DAB edition which has the same wheels as your FR. Much much better than the Turanzas they replaced. Wear rate is a bit high (I've done 13k on them and will be replacing in the next few weeks) and the road noise and fuel consumption will rise a bit but the grip they produce, is much much improved over the Bridgestones.

Thanks all, think I might check out the Rainsport 2s then. Good reviews elsewhere too, and an acceptable price. Time to see if my local tyre fitter can get them, or whether I order them myself to have fitted. smile

Goodyear Eagle F1 or Michelin PE2.

Rainsports are available at ridiculously low prices if you look around though!
