All seems very odd to me.

Spend most of the afternoon watching this stuff on YT interjected by bouts of BF3. I'm sure most of us have seen these types of vids but it still gets me thinking about why, why and why..

Who pays for the damage, do Saudis have insurance? Are cars free to men in white linen in Saudi? I don't get it. We couldn't do this over here for numerous reasons but I'd imagine one of the main reasons is we can't afford it. yes of course Saudi is an oil rich country with I'm guessing near unlimited wealth to lots of families but really this many? A small consolation that they appear to be trashing cheap generic saloons rather than anything interesting.

How are these drifters perceived by the rest of the population, when they hit a member of the public and damage their car / injure someone how is this settled? I just don't get it.

It seems these fellas have a complete disregard for everyone and everything thing else including their own and others lives. Is this seen as dangerous or the same as me squirreling the back end out on a wet roundabout every now and again? From some of the comments left that have been translated from Saudi actually read like "it was a good way to die" etc (I'm guessing they didn't all walk away in these VTs) Bizarre.

Having looked into it, it's suggested most of them are limp wristed too

Does anyone have an insight into this culture - I appreciate I may not get answer to all 411 questions I've asked above

They are all Sheikhs or sons of or what ever, if they crash in to you its your fault no questions asked. If they write off the car they will go and get another. They own the road so they will do what they want on it. Thats as far as I know anyway. smile

ETA: Its not drifting.

Yes, it seems anything that isnt german or italian ends up in some kind of destruction derby out there. It seems the sole purpose of selling Korean and Japanese cars out there is so people can buy them, drift them, crash them, dispose of them.

The fact that the very first section in the youtube video shows some cack hander binning it pretty much says it all about this 'culture'.

it does seem odd doesn't it

In response to "it's not drifting"

Definition

a. To wander from a set course or point of attention; stray.
b. To vary from or oscillate randomly about a fixed setting, position, or mode of operation.

It bloody is! It's not D1 but it's certainly drifting in some format..

Very much this. There is the locals and the foreigners. As my brother described it to me the cars with heavily tinted windows are locals and you do not fk with them as the law will always side with them.

If they run into you its your fault pure and simple.

From the second link in the OP -

"The sexuality of it was interesting, and how (one of the racers) dedicated the race to his beloved, that was another man, was interesting,” Stephanie Kraver, sophomore English major, said...

...One of the most interesting points brought up by Menoret is that in Saudi drifting culture, there is no distinction between heterosexuality and homosexuality as defined by the West. Many “skidders,” as Menoret referred to them, performed for the primary hope of seducing another boy.

Intredasting...

You turn up at a drift even in a FWD family saloon car and see how many people take you seriously. smile

When I was there insurance didn't exist, I hired a Jeep Cherokee for the weekend and asked what insurance there was, "Inshallah" was the response. Also, if you or any other westerner is involved in a traffic accident then you will be at least 50% liable because they say that if you were not 'in Kingdom' then the accident couldn't have happened. A friend of mine had his car written off by a Saudi driving into the back of it, it went 50/50 which bugged him a little as he was in a forecourt filling it with petrol at the time

Doesn't surprise me. My brother says there are more gays in the UAE than anywhere else he's been and he has been all over the show. The place is extremely complex.

Wrong context

Stop trying to get one over on me with your singular definition of the word.

'Snow drift' there you go. Yes I'd get laughed at if I turned up to a drift event with snow. Look at the wider picture.

Anyway...

I only watched 2mins of it, but I love how they haven't worked out that when they're spinning, winding off the lock may help them hehe

Either way, it's mental, but I suppose if it's your day to die...

I'm not trying to get one over on you. hehe

We are talking about cars here not snow, in my opinion what they are doing is not drifting cars. I'm not bothered if you think you can drift inside some snow or not.

Saudi people (or any person who's got land in an oil filled middle east country) are loaded, so if they crash their car, they throw it away and get another one, like a toy. I got a Iraqi friend who's 16 and he's driven stuff like S63 AMG's, Ferrari F430 and a Veyron!

I just spent a week in Dubai with my little brother and the whole driving thing is very odd and complex. Hiring a car legally is a minefield there seems to be no set rule.

Apparently if you dont have a uae license you cannot drive a family or friends car apparently. To hire a car you can do so on a british license but apparently it is advised to have an international drivers permit. If you get stopped without, your drivers license can be seized and you can be heavily fined iirc.

Its odd. I still drove my little brothers car though even though i didnt have a permit but then he can also speak arabic which gets him major points with the locals as the majority of westerners are unable to speak the language.

On the sexuality topic, it wasn't a paradigm I was anticipating! They do it to attract other guys? OK, I must admit to having a bromance with DK on F&FTD but that's something else hehe

It remind me of 'Devils Double' (very good film about Uday Hussein) I know he was an Iraqi but he had 'eclectic tastes' shall we say. Lots of heat and lots of sand = hello sailor?

And the liability thing, they hit you it's your fault - that's tough, but from talks I've had and as said here, different rules apply out there. Illegal to take their money out the country I remember too?

"So what did the guy who hit you look like infidel"?

"Well he was dressed in white officer".

I sat my Saudi test which involved driving forward then backwards in a car park.....I nearly failed because I didn't put my arm on the passenger seat as I looked behind me. It's great fun driving there as you can do whatever you want

Almost! They do incredibly have speed cameras and tolls on the freeway in dubai. Hilariously my brother regularly almost got caught yet they looked fixed site to me so cant work out why he kept seeming surprised there were cameras.
