I am trying to understand what a rebuild of a torque converter consists of?

Currently the symptom is P0740 P0741..aka excess slip. Usually a common issue on ZF 5hp19s where a seal goes.

Now I have had prices ranging from £95 to £350.......

Why is there such a range?

I actually had really crap experience of rebuilt torque converters for a ZF6 - went through two after the first one didn't unlock properly and so caused a massive slam on downchanges. The second one was never anywhere near as good as the original either. If you can buy them from ZF I'd suggest looking into it.

That's for the exchange or the actual swapping?

I sent them mine and they rebuilt it.

Includes return postage and an input shaft seal worth £8 .

Labor to drop the box was £100. and I spent £100 on some other bits like fluid, coupling, some mounts etc.

Good luck with this. What car is it in?

My Porsche 911 Tiptronic had a ZF 5HP19 in it too.

I had two gearbox specialists, many thousands of pounds, two re-conditioned Torque Converters and two brand new units from ZF, 18 months of grief, and the box going in and out of the car a total of 7 times trying to rectify this fault.

At the end of the saga, I realised I might have been better off buying a complete brand new unit from ZF in the first place - but who knows?

But all I seemed to be able to manage to get was a Torque Converter that started off locking up correctly, and then after a few hundred miles decided it didn't want to lock up anymore.

In the end when the same symptoms started to appear yet again - I sold the bloody car whilst it drove 'ok' and before it became properly, noticeably sick YET AGAIN.

Who was doing all this work?

Seems a pretty standard procedure for BMWs with 5hp19....split seal in the torque converter shaft. Rebuild it and then refit back in car.

First of all TES Transmissions in Wiltshire. Then once they'd had a few goes at cocking it up, I went to Automatic Transmissions in Luton - as they'd had experience in looking after all Jonathan Palmer's track day 911's at Bedford Autodrome.

Even then, I still had problems.

After doing a serious amount of research on the 5HP19 - I came to the conclusion (as have other specialists) that this box is a bit rubbish, and not fit for purpose in an application that has a reasonably powerful engine.

Porsche obviously came to the same conclusion - two years after using it in the Tiptronic 911's, they switched to using a Mercedes Benz auto - which seems to be problem free.

I've heard bad things about TES. Never been personally though.

I've heard that the box is actually pretty good, the only issue is the torque converter which is poor, but after a rebuild with updated seals its rather ok. The rest of the box ain't actually that bad.

I think for BMWs and 230bhp cars it's ok!

We use Sussex Auto for the converter rebuilds, as even though we are gearbox specialists, rebuilding converters requires specialist equipment to cut open/re-weld and re-balance the converters.

Never had any real issues with them with the converter side of things to be honest!

Thats good to hear. I'm interested in my invoice though. I had been very busy with work so didin't take much notice and just paid the bill.

When I originally called I was quoted £125 + vat for the rebuild + carriage. He said he would throw in the seal for free.

So I'm not 100% sure how its got to £175! Carriage can't be more than £12. I paid £6 via APC 24hour to get it there!

Vanmatic quoted me £95+vat for the rebuild but seeing as Sussex had good reviews I went for them anyway.

Sigh, I was charged for the seal afterall!

I clearly have a different interpretation of "we'll throw in the seal for ya!" Ended up being only an extra £10.

Never mind! Should be fitted on Thurs!

I bought a new converter from the states and the postman dropped it and damaged the ring gear. Sussex replaced it for a fairly reasonable price also, good turnaround time.

Yeah they're pretty reasonable, and their turn around time was a day which was nice. But was hampered by the weekend getting in the way!

TCC wouldn't lock.

Looked inside torque converter, found a common issue where the seal is split.
