right, to start with, let me say I have not passed my car test but have been riding a motorbike for a few years now, but as my health is not good to say the least, I am looking into getting a car, as riding the bike is getting more an more painfull.

so, Ive done a couple of quotes on cars

first being a 1.7 puma worth 1200, insurer FPF&T for ........£1600
a volvo V40 worth 1000 insured for £1300

I have no NCD, but Im 25 so that should have lowered it a bit, but its stupid to insure a car for that much.

does anyone know of some different cars that are less on the ol' insurance.

Can be anything, Im willing to drive anything from a 4x4 landrover style to a hatch back an everything inbetween.

BUT I am not willing to drive the stupid tiny little cars like the smart car, or the IQ or stuff like that.

So, over to you

It's a case of chucking in quotes and seeing what comes out I'm afraid. Sticking away from sporty generally helps more at 25.

Go for something old enough and you'll probably be able to get some kind of classic policy?

yeah I hadnt thought of a classic, how does that work then, is it just a certain age or before a certain date, like the tax exempt ones.

If you go down the classic route, i would recommend something like a Mercedes 190E - old enough, well engineered yet cheap & simple to run.

You'll typically find bigger cars cheaper - for example a 5-Series (E39) will be cheaper to insure than a 3-Series (E46) i've noticed.

not quite. It needs to be something collectable to an extent, a 1993 205 GTI would qualify, a 1991 Granada probably wouldn't.

Worth the phone call

Erm, still not quite. You can now get a classic policy on a boggo 2000 year Mercedes C-Class (for example) now.

It is entirely dependent on the insurance company obviously.

Reasonably cheap to insure and reasonable fun to drive - something like a 306 D Turbo

Im selling insurance constantly. Classics are out as you have to buy at least 2 cars, which defeats the purpose of getting a cheaper to insure car, along with you need 2years clear driving record etc, its just not gonna work.

Have you been named on anyone elses policy in the last 2years? If you can provide evidence of driving experience (being insured on a car either privately or at work) you can get the same level of discount as you would get with earned ncb.

Try axa direct and prestige.

Do you have to own 2 cars? Can you not just have access to another.

No you don't. I've had a classic policy on an only car before, with no access to any other vehicle, no limit to mileage and commuting included.

Try Lancaster insurance. Their requirements are:

  1. All drivers are aged between 21 and 70.
  1. All drivers have held a full UK or EU licence for at least 3 years.
  1. All drivers have been claim free within the last 12 months & had no more than one claim in the last three years - windscreen claims can be ignored.
  1. All of the drivers have no convictions except 2 minor offences (codes starting CU, MW, PC, SP or TS)
in the last three years.

  1. No drivers are involved in any of the following occupations:
entertainment, TV or radio presenter, professional sportsman/woman, celebrity, professional gambler, hawker, general dealer, offshore oil worker, airside worker, foreign armed forces, courier/delivery driver, debt collector, money lender or unemployed.

Seems good Kam, might look into using them in future. Companies we're using are pretty inflexible with their terms which is a pain when someone is just outside of those terms. That said Ive excellent cover with them on 2.7 boxster for £300 comp and Im under 30 and have 1 years NCB!

unfortunately though 'All drivers have held a full UK or EU licence for at least 3 years. ' means no good for the OP.

The companies we use, you or your spouse must own the car, or I can refer it to underwriters if its a company car as a daily.

Also to the OP get a few quotes for renault and vauxhall 1.5diesel cars, can be megane sized and Ive seen some hilariously cheap premiums on them (Ive seen well below £200 for comp with a good driving record)
