So what you're saying is that the exhaust noise is more important than the engine?

No it has to be my Citroen ZX 1.9 TD! silly

Seriously though, I LOVE the turbo whistle! It has to be a truck that went past me the other week, as I was walking... Sounded like a V8.

Oh! The ones in South West Trains (Waterloo-Exeter) sound pretty good too! And you get to hear the turbo whistle(?) all the way through the journey! smile

I quite like the sound of my other halfs 3cyl TDI Polo, its got a bit more character to it than the average 4 pot.

+1. Shame the rest of the cars they are put in are a bit lacking.

3 litre 6 pot BMW units sound fairly good when pushed hard but my vote goes to the VW V10TDI - sounds like it should be in a massive boat!!

Our 2.0BiTDi unit in the van works well but sounds cr4p.

Have to say I agree with the TD5, I heard one with a loud exhaust on the other day giving it the beans and it genuinely sounded good!

I don't know if it's the best sounding out there but certainly sounds good. Quite a rapid car too - 0-60mph in 5.9 secs IIRC!

The TDCi engine that replaced it (we had one) sounded dismal in comparison. No four pot diesel will ever sound remotely good. Five pot plus is the way forward with diesels.

Having recently heard a Twisted Performance Disco I probably agree, but it's a bit like asking who's the prettiest fat bird biggrin

Forgot to mention the TDV8.

Heard one a while back, sounded really nice and gruff.

And with many things in life, it isn't always a clear cut answer...
