Can I change my excess?

Why dont you just phone them and ask? Seeing as you haven't even told us what insurer how the hell are we going to know if you can or cant.

As has been said, phone them up, although you may have to cancel and take out a new policy (or threaten to). If its been less than 10 days you should get a full refund.

Just send the amount you'd like to increase it by to me and I'll personally make sure that it gets to the insurance company.
