Don't necessarily rule out the Fiesta- the 1.25 engine is a hoot, and IIRC the chassis was the basis for the Puma.

My last car of this type was a Nissan 100NX, not as sharp as the Puma to drive but better than your average hatch. You sat low in the car, I liked the quirky looks, its rare on the road and best of all was the removable glass T-Tops.

You can spend a lot running a 1k GTV or Fiat coupe. Puma is genuinely cheap to run.

Seen some MG ZT 1.8Ts under £1k. I like the looks, but darent buy one because of reliability.

Yep, I was very pleasantly surprised. Drove a lot like a Puma.

But old Fords will be rotten.

£1000 isn't going to buy a lot of anything.

At that money I would seriously consider a K11 Micra, which will be reliable and are much better than most people will admit.

On the other hand, earlier this year I bought this for £1000 and it was great fun.

I've just bought an A3 1.8T for £1000, might not be interesting but it's fairly pokey, will return around 35MPG combined and isn't too bad on insurance either (only about £100 per year more than the 1.4 Civic it's replaced). Mines got tatty body work but FSH and a shed load of receipts.

The GTV is pretty short on rear space. There should be plenty of 2ltr 156es and 147s for a grand though. Problems with that era alfa are frequent cambelt changes, wishbones wear out easily and general wear and tear. Rust can happen but only underneath, its not quite as bad as a Ford of that era except its hidden by good panels. The GTVs rear suspension bushes wear out and can cause damage. Replacing the bushes is reasonably cheap at a good specialist but if done too late can have caused some expensive problems.
All in all, theyre nice cars and fairly reliable and good on fuel, but they are more sensitive to wear and tear than say a Honda Prelude

Puma 1.7 or Fiesta zetec s you can get a good one for £800-1k and they are pretty solid and reliable, just check for rust.
