Sorry if this question has been asked before, but having not spent much time on here until now that is, I keep reading threads stating that an MX5 is 'a PH car'.

What I want to know is what exactly makes a car a PistonHeads car?

I don't think there is one "PH" car, everyone here is an enthusiast in one way or another and a member of PH, so anything they own is a "PH" car IMO

so long as its not on finance or brand new you should be safe.

unless its a audi, or a diesel, or a bmw 320d ES, or anything slightly diffrent to the norm.

but a 335d mapped will bring you a god like status

Range Rover Sport? Upset anybody when used to ferry day nursery charges? Undeniably safe and secure. If a bit bulky.

Who knows!

MX-5's seem to be ok.
Diesels are the spawn of the devil, and the definition of boring. But owning a BMW repmobile(d) is ok.
Turbo's are a bit iffy, as they don't have the right 'power delivery'
V8's are the best. Mostly.
And a sub-£1000 shed is better than anything that anyone happens to buy brand new.

PH is a state of mind, it's about the joy of driving whatever you are in!

I think the essence of being a PHer, or Petrolhead is where cars and motoring come on your list of priorities. most people would put family, friends and home at the top of the tree. But it is what comes next that defines your interests. If cars are in your top 5 priorities in life then that probably qualifies you! Any wealthy person can buy the best gadgets, including a flash car, so that is not a qualification. To me it is more to do with what you sacrifice in order to follow your interest/addiction.

In my case, I own 3 cars when I hardly need one. If I owned a mainstream diesel hatchback my life would be enriched in other areas with the extra cash I would have sloshing about. However, I would see that as my idea of hell, and it would damage my soul, feeling like I was dieing a bit every day!

Anyone who drives something slightly unusual or rare definitely gets my vote, wether a £500 shed or a seldom spotted supercar/classic car...if you live and breathe it, any car is a supercar. If a Ferrari sits in your garage forgotten until you want to impress somebody it isn't!..

There is no such thing as a ph type of car. There is, however, a ph state of mind.

if you bought a brand new kia pacanto you are a total retard you could of had a 12 year old BMW barge for the same money.

Somebody who views their car purely as a white good is not a PH'er. Even people who buy bad cars can be PH'ers if they at least give a fk.

any car that makes you smile when driving it and will get nods from fellow PH'ers at petrol stations.
preferably with an awesome exhaust soundtrack that renders the stereo defunct!

and by that I dont mean a 1.2 with a baked bean can on the back!

What if the korean box suited their needs moreso than a 12 year old barge?
