Obviously no "right or wrong" answers on this one as peoples circumstances, finances, and priorities are different.

But just curious, as a proportion of gross income, how much do we spend on our cars (as in what we paid, rather than what it is worth today and/or running costs).

As a proportion of my income the year I bought it, or my income over the entire time I've owned it?

Sorry, should have been clearer.

When you bought it. smile

What I'm curious about is, when we walk into the dealership, or do a deal privately, what proportion of our income of that year are we handing over?

My car is company, wifes car was about 25% of my income though. But almost 100% of hers! I bought it though so ticked 25%.

Spent a greater % when I was younger, but not because I had more expensive cars lol.

While at uni I spent just over 200% of my student loan income one year pmsl.

We have our first "200% or more"! Good man. smile

Do feel free to let us know what you bought by the way, although appreciate many would prefer to stay anonymous.

Too much,for me anyway.
I,m going to run this car I have now for around about another 2-3 years before I get sucked into buying another.
Saying that,if boredom sets in it will probably go.
At the moment it does the job of economic family, fill it full of holiday/camping gear, chuck bikes on the roof duties very well.
The priorities for my buying criteria at the moment are a little bit boring, but then I was the one that went and had a family lol.

Gross income is a stupid way of measuring it. Plenty of people on here only end up with half of it in their pockets to begin with

Its nothing more than a vague guide at best I agree, just thought it would be an interesting poll and discussion for a Friday. smile

Even more relevant probably is total outgoings, someone single on £30K with no kids and no mortgage is probably better placed than a married man on £60K with a huge mortgage and three kids in private school.

As I say, it's just a bit of fun.

So far 60% of votes are in the less than 25% category, which surprises me a bit to be honest.

Guess we're (well, you're!) all a bit more sensible than I thought! biggrin

That could have applied to me for the secondhand Citroen AX GT I bought while I was a student, so don't get excited.

I spent 1/3 but checked 25% - the categories were a bit confusing, but seeing as I didn't read the OP enough to spot the word gross I guess it's probably my fault.

So it's 5% or less... 25% or less... 200% or less or more? wobble
