Insurance oddities
Discussion
I'm looking at insurance quotes as I may want to replace the ST24 with something my girlfriend can learn to drive with. Now all I have been hearing for the last few years, is that insurance is cheaper for unpopular cars, barges, etc. As background, I'm 30, passed my test about 13 years ago, with 2 years no claims (even though I haven't claimed in 10 years). My girlfriend is 26.
Looking at various quotes today, I found it is more expensive for me to insure a 406 diesel than a modified Saxo VTR
It is also cheaper to add my girlfriend as a named driver, whether I select provisional or 1 month full driving license... She will also bring the insurance on the Mondeo down by over £100!
I knew insurances aren't supposed to makes sense, but I was still quite surprised indeed! What other random quotes have people been surprised by?
Also, when quoting for a LPG'd 605 V6, Admiral decided the car was worth £22. I chuckled.

i've found with insurance now its not 'whats a dangerous car', its 'what car do most people own' or 'what gets most claims'. another excellent reason to go thinking outside the box about your next motor
eg - my 205gti - with CAT1 alarm £740±
my 205 gti - with NO security whatsoever £500...
surely the one without security would be a greater risk to insurance

One of my cars was cheaper to insure because it was parked on the driveway and not in the garage.
Mine is cheaper on the road, than in the garage or drive! Quite a bit cheaper too! Also 40 quid cheaper if I change the security from factory fitted, to none !!! (although I have remained factory fit, as otherwise I would be lying)
Changing my job title slightly also saved quite a bit, they don't listmy actual job, but I picked from a list of jobs that I believe describe my role to some extent. All in all I can reduce my quote by 200 quid just by legitimate tweaking!

Last year my car was stolen from my driveway after they broke into my house and took the keys. Get my new car, call for insurance. Explain car is kept on driveway but I do have a garage. I was told driveway is cheaper because in the even of a house(garage attached) fire I may not be able to get the car keys to get the car out of the garage.
Cheaper to park on road because thieves less likely to know which house the owner resides at.

MGF - 180
Peugeot 306 cab - 310
Peugeot 206 1.6 estate - 480
All fully comp, can't begin to try and understand the logic, all we're doing on price comparison sites

Cheaper to insure me on a Mk1 MR2 than on a 1.2 Corsa. However at the time I only had the Corsa so had to go with the cheapest deal as the MR2 wasn't a given (still isn't, sadly) and they won't even touch the MR2... but going for the Corsa on the well-priced MR2 policy would be £600 more painful than the MR2...
