I've always believed that this is bad practise, I personally get nervous when the tank gets low.

Is it just a myth that running on fumes causes sediment and so on to be stirred up, clogging the fuel filter or are modern cars just not troubled by it?

I didn't believe it until I had to a tank drain on my Yaris diesel just before Christmas.

Might have happened either way but the amount of gunk that had blocked the fuel sender/pickup unit was a surprise.

A lot of the crud in your fuel tank is floating on the surface. Wen you go "empty" all of the fuel has passed through the filter - including the surface.

But you'd have to be trying hard to clog a modern fuel filter.
