DSG/SMG on an automatic license?
Discussion
Afternoon all,
I've been looking at cars for the other half however she only has an automatic license. I have found some nice cars that are better than your traditional slush box, however one is an SMG and the other two are DSG's. Now, I know how these boxes work etc and how they're much better than your 'average' slush box, so that part is fine, BUT are they still classed as auto?
I'm assuming so as they have no clutch pedal, but at the same time, they can also be put into manual mode?
What would the DVLA/Police/Insurers take to this?
Thanks in advance

Interesting concept. I would have thought that DSG type things are classed as autos.
It begs the question of whether a pre-selector can be driven on an auto licence. Early Daimlers and such had pre-select gearboxes with fluid flywheel drive take-up and a gear-change activation pedal in place of a clutch. To move off one simply released the footbrake after selecting first but changing up and down required selection by small lever and then a tap of the third pedal. Would they count?
A similar concept was done in the NSU Ro80. That had a gear-change button and two pedals.

Oh and for you - thanks for your input, really helpful you absolute clown, you've added so much to this topic.

He's given you another correct point for free, you should be grateful really.
My PDK 911 has Automatic written on the V5. Makes me feel less of of a man when I read it

Didn't some lorries have something like that until fairly recently? Not sure if there's such a thing as an auto HGV licence though. It begs the question of whether a pre-selector can be driven on an auto licence.
