Standing in the post office earlier doing quite a bit of stuff I was bored enough to vaguely pay attention to what other people were doing. Most people of course were in there to buy car tax and its unbelievable how many of them dont bring their insurance certificate because 'they didnt know' and most of them were unaware the price had gone up and had already written out a cheque for last years amount.

Are people really this stupid?

Yes.

Next!

On a serious note though. Majority of motorist couldn't give a toss about tax. One of those annoying expences they would rather not have to bother with so would never have known of any price increase. Bit stupid of them to not actually read the letter that came through the door with the amount on it before writing the cheque out.

Do people really still pay for things by Cheque? My bank account doesn't even come with a cheque book.

I still get mine from the post office because I can pop in at 2pm when it's empty and walk out two minutes later with a disc. Also I quite like them being handwritten for some reason.

After spending how long searching out the docs, walking to the P.O and back?

I spend 90 seconds at the laptop and the dog retrieves the post for me when it arrives biggrin

People do far more annoying things at the P.O - paying bills, paying in/drawing/moving money, pissing around with various bit of paper.

It is nicer having a hand written one.

I was already last night to go to the post office to get it today, but couldn't find my MOT so had to use my mums credit card (had the cash already). I completely forgot that the MOT certificate had changed, and it was at the front of my car folder >.<.

Oh well, saves me waiting in a line and we get some points too.

Tried to get tax at the post office in Stafford today, you'd have thought I'd asked them to defuse a bomb! No luck there. Tried phoning the DVLA, apparently, nobody in England, Scotland or Wales is able to tax a NI registered car. Phoned the DVLNI, useless censoreds shoot

Quick phone call back home, posted all the documents over special delivery, to get re-taxed at the local post office tomorrow. I envisage interesting roadside discussions with the BiB over the next few days mad

Not everybody is interested in driving or cars. VED and so on is just another bill to pay. If a large number of people are ignorant to the paperwork requirements, the reminders and associated paperwork need changing and even a press campaign, if the problem is large enough.

I suspect it's not really a major problem in life.

True but its not difficult to look up how much something costs before you go to buy it and acquiring the information of 'what you need to bring with you' is hardly hidden in Narnia.

Do these people only bring enough money to buy 20 litres of petrol based on last years prices? Do these people go to Tesco only with enough money to buy milk based on what it cost last year?

comprehension fail... says right on the renewal what you must bring.

Last time I did it though there was a guy getting about 30 tax discs! god knows what for, perhaps he owns a taxi company, but he was there for a long time! Would of thought they might of had a more efficient way of doing car tax for a fleet of vehicles.

Maybe a massive tax disc which blankets all of the vehicles, each of them having their own little piece of it.

The renewal for one of my cars came through with the old price on it.

Bit stupid of you to trust anything on DVLA letter headed paper.

So there is an online service for checking MOT and insurance status, yet the Post Office STILL won't use it at the counter and instead rely on two pieces of paper which are now spectacularly forgeable? Glad I do it online.

True, I should have ignored it and let them start sending fines instead of renewing online. wink

The renewals were obviously sent prior to the official release of the budget so had the old price on. It is hardly surprising then that a few people did not realise they would need to pay more. At least they were at trying to keep the queue length down by preparing the cheque first. Though why they do not just use a debit card?
