Looking at suggestions for my next car
Discussion
Hi so Im looking at suggestions for my next car, I currently have a Vauxhall Astra MK4 (G) 1.8 Sxi 3dr and I'm getting approx 34 MPG. I'm using a full tank every week so I'm looking at £220 of fuel Per Month, which eats into my wage. Its got about 96k on the clock and roughly I'm doing 13k miles a year.
Now I'm hoping to move to something new (hence the point of this thread). It needs to be reliable and have fairly cheapish parts if there are common faults etc. but mostly high mpg (so diesel) and with space unlike my astra. For roughly £7k now if the car was a steal Id go to £8k and part ex my car to bring it down bout hopefully £7k before the part ex.
Now I've been looking at the following (see below) any suggestions to these
Audi A6
Alfa Romeo 159
Ford Mondeo
Vauxhall Vectra (not really a fan tbh)
Or am I being silly and just wanting a new toy and I should sit back and enjoy my dis-astra ?

I'm sure someone clever can do the maths on this but basically you are never going to save money by buying a new car just for fuel saving. Run the ashtray into the ground and then replace it. Although personally I'd buy another car because I only need a tiny tiny excuse to go car shopping

Exactly but if you were me and had said ashtray what would you go for to try and save a little so the new car is offset per say
The boring answer is to keep the Astra. But for me you only live once >cliché< and you should get a new car - as long as you're not over stretching yourself, of course - and that car has to be the one that is actually on your list ; the 159.

I rounded this up to the nearest five, with petrol at 140 and diesel at 150 to make it simple for me.
currently costs you: £2363 to drive to work at 35 mpg
If you were to get 45 mpg out of a diesel: £1770
You would save a theoretical 600 pounds per year, so lets say you keep the car for 3 years, that would be 1800 pounds saved over that time.
You would spend 7000 pounds to make that saving?
I can only suggest that you do this if you think the car would make you significantly happier, during your commute.
By the way, I'm currently preparing for a selection board where I have to do such calculations, otherwise I'd have not bothered. Please tell me if I made any mistakes.

HIGHLY APPRECIATED ! I do like my astra a lot a hell of a lot but Im thinking I only live once so I might as well get something that will make me a bit more happier on my commute in which I can affordcurrently costs you: £2363 to drive to work at 35 mpg

My girlfriend drives an astra, I'm not sure I could drive one for commuting, as my current car, a 406, is far more relaxed to drive and I consider the interior to be more tasteful.
So if it makes you happy and you can afford it, then consider the new car as something to make you happy.
If you want I could twist the maths to a more manly equation?
