This is on a well respected site to do with trailer towing but what would you actually take this to mean?

"Check that the Trailer Gross Weight does not exceed the Towing Capacity of the Towing vehicle."

That the combined weight of trailer and load doesn't exceed the rating of the car doing the towing.

^^^ This.

My car is rated to tow up to 1800Kg so a trailer and it's load must not exceed this.

Its interesting as some read it as being the trailer MAM weight whereas others read it as being the actual trailer weight

As I understand it, "Gross Weight" means current total weight "Maximum Gross Weight" (MGW) is the same as MAM.

The DVLA site does explain what these mean here:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensi...

Where confusion arises is that your "B" entitlement on your licence allows you to tow a trailer with a gross TRAILER weight the same or under that of the UNLADEN car weight, but then you have B+E which allows you tow a "heavier trailer that isn't covered in the descriptions for category B".
