Not sure if this is the best forum for this, but GG see's a lot of traffic so thought it was worth a shot.

Anyhow what I want to do is plan a custom route on a PC, preferably by clicking on a map, or failing that using coordinates as I'm not visiting towns, post codes or junctions. I also want control over the route between way points and then be able to upload it to my TomTom.

I've had a go messing about on Google maps, but not only is it hard to specify points on the map you want to drive to, you don't seem to have any real control on the route it takes to get from one to the other.

What I'm trying to do is plan a route to go and do a circular route to drive through 15+ fords (due to the high river levels at present hehe ), I know where they are on a map, but it'd be so much easier to create a route I could use on a SatNav to save faffing about with maps while driving.

Hoping someone can help.

Dead easy if you have a proper Satnav (Garmin) 'cos it comes with a thing called Mapsource which lets you plan a route on your PC and download it to the unit. Simple and effective.

There's a thing TYRE http://www.tyretotravel.com/ that I've used. Very easy to upload to the tomtom and very easy to plan routes with using google maps.

I use a free utility called ITNConv to do just this.

It allows you to plot waypoints by clicking on Google Maps, and save the resulting route as a TomTom itinerary.

If you have a Tom Tom, there is a basic route planning on their website which can then be sent to a device when connected to your PC.

However, for detailed, specific routes just use google maps, use the link creator and then paste the link into this site; http://www.houghi.org/tomtom/index.php

This will then create an .itn file that you drag to your tom tom (which should so up as mass storage on your pc). Put it in a folder also called ITN.

Then, on the tom tom you find the option to use itenerary as a route and select whatever you called the file.

I use MS Autoroute to create my maps as I'm regularly on a slow connection or offline when I'm offshore and then upload the file to my Garmin using Tyre.
