I am in the process of looking around for my next car - daily driver of about 70 miles a day, and three ankle biters so need 7 seats.
My monthly budget for running costs isn't exactly tight, but neither is it endless so due to my daily self funded mileage I am going diesel. Budget approx £6-7k.

So here's the dilemma.

My heart wants a LR Discovery. I like the way they look, and have always fancied a proper 4x4, with opportunities for a bit of Sunday afternoon off road pay and play action. My lifestyle justifies one as more than a Chelsea tractor - the OH has horses so I spend time off road and towing, I also live well out in the sticks so the security of being able to get out come whatever the glorious British weather brings would be nice. However, the Disco is obviously not the most economical in TD5 form, probably returning high 20's. It also has a well documented history of being able to deliver wallet destroying bills!

The alternative option would be a Zafira/Touran. Same child lugging capacity, good MPG, average bills. However, nothing to like, no fun. A people carrier as daily driver makes me want to kill myself, but I know in these times of austerity this is the choice I should make and put off my 'fun' car days until the kids have buggered off or I've retired!

So, do I hang up my PH smiley and buy the people carrier, or man up, cross my fingers and go for the Disco?

Apologies in advance if bad paragraphs etc, posting from iPhone!

I'd go for a LR but a 4motion touran is a good 2nd choice. Forget the zafira.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I don't think Touran was ever made in 4motion form. Golfs and bizarrely Sharans, but never Tourans.
I only say this as I never found one for sale anywhere!

Get rid of the horse - no need for a disco - buy something more fun that will work.

Win win win.

A sharan is a cheaper option but I think you can get 4mo tourans but they are rare

Wouldn't bother offroading a disco either unless you bought it specifically for that reason and don't mind it being parked on the drive for a few days after you have broken it.
Seen many a daily driver LR toy end up on it's roof at pay and play sites.

Any suggestions for a diesel 7 seater that ticks the 'fun' box, because I'm struggling!
If fun = power, the Touran comes with the 170 lump, and the Toyota Verso comes as a T180, but a Toyota Verso would result in me driving it into a tree just so there was one less on the world!

It's not the iPhone wink

To the OP, the 4motion touran is a very nice car. I'd take that over the LR as an everyday, (particularly after my sisters LR3).

3 kids means 3 child seats (we knocked them out quickly smile ) Not many vehicles are wide enough to accommodate 3 seats side by side across a back seat, and it's also not very safe for the middle seat in the event of a side impact.

I do like that, I had also looked at the Terrano which I suspect is a touch smaller.
Hadn't considered a Patrol though, thanks!

I don't know if it's actually a concern, but you'll not tow a proper sized horse trailer with a MPV.
I done a bit of research already, our trailer is quite light, and can accommodate 2 donkies, but I'd only be able to tow with one on board. Not actually and issue, but good point well raised!

You said you have 3 kids. So one seat each for the kids, one for mum, one for dad. That by my admittedly limited maths skills equals a total of 5 seats. So Armed with your budget of 6-7 grand (iirc), look for nice estate cars in budget.
