I have been looking for a new car and have been swaying towards a fiesta Zetec S on an 11 plate on a finance deal, Today I went to a main ford dealer (don't know if I can name names but it's initials are E H) the car I've seen is a good price but just a little bit more than I'd like to pay, the salesman and his manager have told me there is no leeway on price as they are not allowed to discount at all he won't even chuck in £70 road tax is he having me on or is this really the case? I was under the impression with used cars you don't normally pay the asking price

Nice car, if they dont drop the price, I wouldnt buy it on principle - its not as if it's a highly sought after car thats in short supply is it?

I would give the dealer your number, explain why you're walking away, and tell him if he changes his mind before you do a deal elsewhere, to call...

Well that's what I would do, anyway!

There are 11ty million of them, not getting a few quid off a Fiesta is mental. If you really want it, go in and say you'll have a deal today on finance and they SHOULD bend over backwards. If you leave it till back end of the month even more so.

I imagine there are plenty of these cars around. If you don't get the deal you want, move on.

I'm not sure if someone replying here with "my mate got a 1k discount" will have any sway with the salesman.

If they have a demand for the car or are convinced they can sell it at the advertised price they will not lower it.

At the end of the day its up to them how much they sell the car for.

Look hard enough and you should be able to find a dealer willing to deal to your budget.

The thing is it has heated leather seats which may not sound like much but it seems to be the only one in the north west that has them of a similar age price and mileage

It's irrelevant what it's listed at really, and the "principle" of expecting a discount doesn't help. Don't miss out on a car you want for the cost of a few quid of fuel. He could've listed it at £20k and given you a massive discount!

You say it's well priced, but if it's still too high for you then look elsewhere. As others say, there are plenty about.

I did this when helping my mum buy a car. I got a phonecall from the increasingly desperate salesman within 90 minutes offering a previously non-existent discount. Stay firm, OP.

If the car you were looking at is outside of your budget, why were you looking at it?

If I had a budget of say 10k, I would look at cars for up to 10k. Not 10,500.

Bit odd that he wouldn't tax the car. Did it have any left on it?

As has been said, if they have other people looking at that one, then they may get the full asking off of one of them. You have said it is the only one with that spec locally, so maybe its worth the asking price?

Sorry, all this sounds harsh, but its not meant to be.

The previous owner had claimed it back, it's not out of my price range just had the expectation that I would get money off

You could never work in procurement. Thats not a bad thing though.

There is always a deal to be had.

Walk away. Hand them some details, tell them exactly what you want and to call you if a deal can be made. Theres tons out there and something will crop up.

If I was purchasing an 11k car on finance and they wouldn't throw in £70 tax I'd probably stroll out just out of principal, but that's just me.

The car salesmen who you have bought anything from must have thought Christmas had come early that year.
