As a young petrolhead (19) I am sad to say that I am still without a car. With crippling insurance and with petrol prices on the increase the aspect of owning a relatively interesting car has become over time more of an impossibility. As a result of this I have come to thinking of buying something like a Honda Insight, more specifically the mk1 version from 2000-2001. My question is should this be the kind of car I should be looking for as a petrolhead? The added benefits of a car like this is good fuel economy and not having to pay road tax. Which in the future would mean I would have more money to buy something I would actually like (When I'm about 25). However I have no idea what a car like this costs to run. Are they cheap to fix if something goes wrong? What about insurance? As a 1.0 I can't see the insurance being too steep? Anyway would love to know the thoughts of Pistonheads infinite wisdom on matters relating to cars! Anyway contribution would be very well received.

Cheers, Cameron

Mk1 Insight is truly a car for car-nerds. I love them.

But they are not particularly cheap to buy... prices seem to be increasing and they are hard to find. If you could get a 5 years motoring out of an Insight cheaper than you can out of a 1.0 Corsa (for example), I'd be amazed.

This is another aspect I've looked at. Its something I'm planning on keeping for a very long time. So if it maintains its value would it be worth the fairly large investment? I've found one at around £4,500. Is that the sort of price their at now?

Yep. I saw one cheaper last week, but at £2,700 it was gone before I'd even picked the phone up.

Guess motorcycles aren't an option then?

I'm 19, living in a city, and insurance is orders of magnitude less than a car of equivalent performance.

Lets face it- they are god awful and a very un-petrolhead car.

No amount of people pretending is going to change that. In fact I cannot think of a worse car in existence. TO me that is exactly the same as doing a massive st, spraying it metalic green and putting lego wheels on it.

But... at your age your priority is just getting on the road and driving. I used to love driving so much at your age I didn't give a flying toss what I was in.
The first car I drove was a lime green Lada Riva and I loved every moment of it.
In short, whilst the novelty of driving is so high you are right to do it as cheaply as humanly possible rather than worrying about dream cars. Plenty of time for that

Well yes, As a University student although I live away from home (I'm a first year) I still go home from time to time. If I bought a motorbike I wouldn't be allowed home... She loathes bikes more than anything else. Its something I'd like to do but at this moment in time it isn't an option.

The only car that came up with vaguely reasonable (near bike price quote) was a mid 90s Nissan 100NX 1.6, at 800 TPF+T, however, the company who offered that went bust afterwards...

I like it, very unusual, looks straight out of a David Bowie movie.
Go for it, if you don't like it you can always set it free.
I'd be tempted to drive around in it wearing a silver space suit

I do feel for the new young drivers of today and how crippling insurance is. Back when I passed it was pretty easy to get insured on a small engined hot hatch and hence my first car being a very battered Mk1 Golf GTi. Nowadays they would laugh at you if you even tried calling in as a 19 year old wanting to insure such a car.

Get the insight it will be dull as you like but at least it's a motor and a cheap one to run at that.

About £4,000 as a maximum. Its very frustrating to be able to afford an interesting car but know that the insurance would be sheer insanity.

So an insight is in budget then.

Have you been quoted on one?
