So what do you lot do when you want be dust off the summer car.
Do you just insure in spring and cancel the policy at the end of the summer? are there fees to cancel the policy.

Im not sure what to do to, how can I insure my 2nd car for just the summer.

I just keep my Tiv insured all year round. The insurance only costs about £300 and it means I can drive the car a few times through the winter to keep everything working nicely.

Cancellation fees are usually now so high and the fact brokers claw back their (otherwise) lost commission means that you're unlikely to get anything back after about 6 months of cover. Plus, keep it insured and gain another year's no claims bonus.

Would you be thinking of completely cancelling a policy (so the car isn't covered if it gets stolen over winter) or laid up cover (no road use allowed)?

What if your car gets stolen or torched during the winter? In my experience, there would be very little difference and with only 6m cover, you would never earn any NCB.

The most I ever paid on a second car was £150 (for my modern XJR) so it didn't seem worth messing about, besides as above it's nice to have it insured against theft.

Also, haven't the rules changed recently, which means that cars HAVE to be insured even if they are off the road?

That's right, isnt it?

Not if they are SORN'd.

Ahh, correct. Here is the list of exceptions:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicl...

If you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times.

The exceptions are:
•if you have made a SORN for the vehicle
•if your vehicle has been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 January 1998 – unless it was brought back into use
•if your vehicle is recorded as stolen, passed or sold to the motor trade or between registered keepers
•if your vehicle is recorded scrapped or permanently exported by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing (DVLA)

I think FreeLitres might be right, although the only way they'll pick it up is if they 'spot' the car on the road, if it is covered on your drive or garaged I can't see how they'd know.
Or on the database which shows it is neither sorned or insured. Computer magic.

Try CCI, you will probably find that it is a lot cheaper than you think to insure it all year round.
