Hi all, posted a while ago about finding a small (auto) cabrio for the wife but have realised the budget is too small. She quite likes the Citroen C2, why should I not buy one?

The Sensodrive gearbox is woeful, there you go, a valid reason.

Because a hundred narrow-minded PHers will tell you that all French cars are st.

Real answer: No reason at all. smile

Not owned one, although the Missus came close a few years ago. I've driven a couple as holiday rentals, and they seem fine. Can't comment on the ownership experience, but I'd recommend you get that advice form somebody that has actually had one, and not from the regular naysayers on here wink

They're badly screwed-together French rubbish, with woeful electrics, that will go rusty and fall apart before your eyes.

Oh and will probably fold up hideously like a tin can in a crash.

I could go on - but will that do you for now? smile

To be honest they're ste due to the horrific engines found in them (the TU really struggles in these cars), all the main controls are lifeless and without any feel, the car brings no smile what so ever, they are pretty flimsy.

However, they are economical and kinda practical with the split rear tailgate.

Guys, please bear in mind the op is asking for advice on the purchase of a small convertible auto for his wife.

Just buy one. It isn't going to matter.

Then come back with a question on V8's.

wink

Funny you say that because most French cars that i have seen upwards to 20 years old seem to be very rust resistant. Yet the same cant be said for other manufacturers of the same era.

C2's are fine. Just dont get a sensodrive auto.

C3 offers more room and cute rather than edgey looks. There's also a cabrio version (Pluriel).

1.1 doesnt offer much if any extra economy over the 1.4 so go for that or the 1.6. The 1.4 16v Hdi is really economical, you will be convinced the fuel gauge is not working properly...

Oh and they have really really light steering at slow speed.

What a stupid post, all cars have to meet to safety standards. Rusty, never seen it.

I think for the money these cars fetch they are a bargain, obviously all cars have a few well known issues, this one is just the semi auto gearbox, mainly due to the fact it's a manual gearbox with the electrical motors that tend to either get a gremlin and need a software update or fail completely.

I test drove a C2 vtr when they came out and it was quite decent. I even liked the Sensodrive gearbox but I don't think I would like it so much out of warranty. One with a normal manual would be nice enough as a runabout though.

Good little cars, got a 1.4 and average 37mpg with a heavy foot. Its plastic tat on the inside, but I really don't spend much time rubbing my dashboard. Quirky styling, bit of road noise on the motorway but not that bad for a small hatch, fun to chuck it about and easy to park.

Had it a year and a half now and nothing has gone wrong with it.

My sister ran a C2 with the daft semi auto box for four years and other than the usual consumables it never
gave her any issues. She really didn't look after it well either, when I asked how long the service light
had been on she had no idea what it even meant!! poor bloody car frown.

Owned one for three years. Bought it from new, wish someone had told me to buy something better and three years old, but they didn't.

It was a 1.6 VTR with the flappy paddle gearbox.

Anyway first one I had lasted a few weeks before gearbox problems showed themselves. Basically it would hesitate for up to a second or two mid gear change. Quite unnerving as you pull out of a junction, or mid overtake.

Citroen had it back 4 or 5 times, each time I had a loaner. This went on for months, new ECU and all sorts. Couldn't fix it. In the end I had an ongoing battle with Citroen UK and they eventually agreed to take the car back and give me another one.

Got a new car, new March reg and they fitted a CD changer as a freebie. New car was fine then for 2 years until I had a bump. After that this car developed exactly the same fault which took several long trips to citroen and was never fully resolved.

When the three years warranty was up I got shot quickly, accepting a woeful p/x price. By this point (3 yrs 27k miles) the front seat ratchet system had broken, and a major suspension part went. This was 10 yrs ago but I think it was part of the steering rack, can't remember.

When it worked it was a decent little car, engine wasn't bad, interior suited me at 21, not sure I'd be happy in it now as I remember it being very orange.

Manual might be a good shout, but only if it's dead cheap.

As per another thread I had a C2 1.4 Hdi VTR (manual box) as a courtesy car while my courier van was off the road.

1500+ miles in one week including a fair old time in London traffic, slogging up and down the motorways with blood on board half the night, and hooning round B-roads the other half.

The fuel computer showed 70mpg when driving at a steady pace on some journeys (door to door not just motorway). I averaged over 60mpg.

The handling was great fun, like an eager puppy smile

As a courtesy car it had been poorly treated but was well screwed together, no rattles, creaks or squeaks.

It tooks loads of stuff in it with the flex folding seat options.

Parking is easy as it's little and square.

I'd be happy to own one smile

We have one. Came by it due to a need for a new car, MrsC not really having a clue what she wanted, and this being on sale locally at a cheap-enough price. Oh, and she liked the colour.

But tbh, it's not nice. Tinny, wappitty, and with epic levels of road noise. She's between jobs atm but says she'll out it as soon as things improve.

Couldn't recommend it. If it's a gift, well, don't look it in the mouth but otherwise, move along, there have to be nicer options out there.

Mrs SB had a 1.1 for 2 years. Don't get the 1.1 as it is scarily slow, plus it has no rear seat space or luggage space. Other than that, not too bad a car for the money (especially as it was a dirt cheap lease deal).

I've had mine since 2004 I got it brand new and I love it to bits and it it has around 100k miles on it.

that said I wouldn't suggest one to you. mine is a 1.4 manual and I've had the suspension linkage drop, ransomed parts literally fall off (trim around the window, interior trim around vents etc) the computer decides randomly since I have a child seating should turn my airbags off (a child seat has never been in my car) the engine tells me its overheating if it sits still for more than 5 min but even citroens mechanics says its running too cold.

seats are AMAZING (mine is a furio has the same interior and vtr and vts) and quite simply I love it. but its not reliable, the economy has dropped from 44.9 to 38.1 MPG, servicing costs are always around double what I expect.. but its loves keeping its tyres, I've had? 8 tyres I. total in 8 years. that's the set it came with and one new set. they last well (mitchelin evergy savers) and have eboughr grip to make the suspension the looting factor.

well I'm a little drunk ATM pm me if you need more personal experience ^_^

folds worse than a tin can... but it keeps you very safe... unfortunately I know.
