Hi,
I am looking to buy a car that currently has a private plate and the owner wants to keep the plate. What is the process for getting it back on it's correct age related plate? I presume the current owner does this before I buy it?

cheers
Rich

Correct.

If you buy the car with the plate still assigned on the V5, its technically now yours.
He should get it removed before you buy it, it can take some time for all the paperwork to come back from the DVLA though.

The owner should do this before you buy it.
It will probably get the number plate originally assigned to the car.

I've just done this.
Car was put back to the original plate before I sold the car. Have to say the DVLA were very quick to process (all by post).

I have been able to do this at the DVLA centre all in one transaction (the car gets put on a new reg AND in new owners name whilst you get your plate back on retention through the post). I'm not sure it is standard practise (this was at the Stockton DVLA centre) but it may be worth enquiring to save you time.
