BMW X6..... why does it get such a bad reception on here?
Discussion
I think they are pointless, and are entirely about the image thing of an SUV.
They do not have the practicality of a 4x4, are the dynamics will be no better than an equivalent BMW estate - and its probably less practical than that and all.
As such, to my mind anyway, it is all style and no substance. All mouth and no trouser. Symbolic of the most vacuous elements of society.

I don't doubt it wouldn't be decent to drive, well built and reliable, but I think they are pig ugly and do not see what purpose they serve. X5 is fine with me and X3 I can understand to an extent, but the X1, X6 and 5 series GT (which is an abomination and makes the X6 look like a masterpiece) are lost on me
Am i missing the point with these 'its pointless' comments? Its big and brash sure, but its probably a very comfortable way to travel. Commanding driving position, great dynamics, safe, comfortable and pretty sylish way to travel.
Its no more pointless than all the other big SUV's and 4x4's I see on my daily commute - I've yet to see a Range Rover thats been used for off roading before their value plummets to sub £6000. The ones I see on the motorway in the morning are always sparkly clean, and usually only one person on board. None seem to be used for serious off roading - who in their right mind would take a £70k car off roading anyway? Even RR Discoverys seem to see very little actual 4x4 use when they are new - nothing more than towing a trailer anyway and going down the off farm track.
THe X6 seems to me to be no less pointless than any other similar car. Yes you cant put two large dogs in the boot but hey, how many RR's and RRS's do you see with mutts in the back? (well, 4 legged mutts anyway...)
They do have an image issue - all bodykits and big wheels - but there are loads of 'other cars' that have the same issue.

Initially I wasn't keen either. But my brother bought one and I must say I really like it. Very comfortable, lots of toys, handles well, decent mpg, and surprisingly quick (x35d mapped Its no more pointless than all the other big SUV's and 4x4's I see on my daily commute - I've yet to see a Range Rover thats been used for off roading before their value plummets to sub £6000. ). With the roof box filled with snowboards, its the perfect transportation to get four of you to the slopes in comfort

They're so ugly / brash / uncool I think they've gone right round and back to cool.
Lets face it, the only reason to have one is a statement.
i kind of agree. In a world of "omg we're killing the planet" nothing quite says 'f**k you eco-greenies' like an X6!Lets face it, the only reason to have one is a statement.
I too cant actually afford to run one. If my commute was half the distanc eit is then I'd consider it....

A PH'er as well.i never understand the "it's pointless" comments. is a ferrari enzo in the uk is "pointless" because it's too fast? maybe we should all drive around in 1 litre diesels because they're sensible.
if people like them, why should you give a flying f
k whether you think it's pointless or not?
the 5 series GT btw, is a very good car....if hideously ugly. having been in one they are nigh on S class levels of refinement and comfort for much less money, with the extra leg room of a 7 series (despite it's name, it's based on a 7 series not a 5 series) which means it's that bit quieter and nicer inside with the added benefit of a hatch boot over a normal 7 series. ugly, definitely....pointless, definitely not.
is my 7 series "pointless" because it's bigger than what i need?
if people want the 4 seater with a high driving position with pretty decent dynamics that isn't a RR then why aren't they allowed an X6? and seriously, about the "no benefit of 4x4"....how many RR vogues go off-road? i suspect less than 5% of them.
rant over

Pistonheads is supposedly a car enthusiasts website and the X6 is the antithesis of all that entails perhaps. It's a massively heavy cod 4x4 with a sort-of coupe body on top so is it an off-roader or not? What is it? If it was designed to be an enjoyable drive BMW wouldn't have made it so heavy or with such a high centre of gravity. If it was an off-road fun machine it wouldn't have huge alloys or low-profile tyres.
In short it's a very expensive and larger Suzuki X-90 and regarded as fondly as the X-90 by real car enthusiasts.
