Strange opportunity...

I have been looking at some Police disposal auction websites in a central EU country.

These cars were presumably seized by foreign officials for lack of tax payment or stolen/recovered or whatever. Anyway, they are being sold via auction on legitimate government/Police sites.

Most of the cars are from country of origin, but several are RHD on UK plates. On looking at the DVLA website on one particular car that I am interested in, it does have an exported marker against it (and last taxed Jan 2011).

So this car appears to be in limbo. It is exported from UK, but not imported to another EU country.

If I were to buy said car, does anyone know what taxes and charges I am likely to be liable for when bringing the car home?
I have no idea what sort of paperwork I am likely to receive - so don't know if it will have v5 or export papers etc.
Also, when I imported a car from Canada a few years ago, I was able to insure it on the chassis number and drive around on Canadian plates for a few months before registering it on UK plates. Presumably the insurance company would be able to do this, but of course it would actually be on UK plates, albeit marked as exported. I could MOT it, but not tax it. I would only want to drive the car to the UK, and it could then sit on the drive until the paperwork is complete.

I know it seems like a lot of hassle, but the car is potentially some £10k cheaper than a UK registered example, so it may be worth it!

I have obviously looked on various websites trying to find info out, there is loads on importing from inside and outside EU, but nothing on *re*-importing.

Anyone had similar experience, or can point me somewhere that I can find out the procedure/costs?

Thanks in advance...

Roo

Last one we had we still had the rest of the V5 for it.

Quick trip to the local DVLA office and a new V5 appeared in the post two weeks later.

If it's got no paperwork at all you might struggle.

shouldn't be any taxes if still with a UK V5

Thanks guys. So what if there is no v5?

Still shouldn't be any importation or cutoms taxes as it's from a EU country, so long as any local taxes have been paid.

I would do an HPI on the chassis/reg number to check it hasn't been marked as stolen here - otherwise you might get a nasty surprise when you bring it back...

That's a valid point. Thank you.

Agree with the above - EU permits movement of cars without exporting them. You should be fine, even without an up to date V5C.

I was able to secure insurance on the chassis number of my car when I returned to the UK last year (through 2gether insurance) but they stipulated that it was only to be driven to or from an IVA test.

Would like to hope that being from a Police auction, the only additional local costs would be the auction/administration fees.
