Best car under 5k today(For the wife)!!
Discussion
I want to buy my wife another car. She has a 1.4 fiesta 53 plate mk6. She is a good driver and the car doesn’t really do her justice. She drives 12k miles a year for work so the car needs to be reliable. Sometimes she picks up clients so it has to be non-offensive. I want the car to be at least as safe as her current car(4star euro ncap so no civic vti unfortunately) and the car wants to be relatively quick as we already have a diesel for my work. Fiesta ST seems like a good compromise so far.
Throwing down the gauntlet for under £5000.

Lexus IS200? Get a nice 05-reg with 50-60k miles?
The Lexus will be thirsty. What about a toyota Auris (heres a 2009 model with 52000 miles)

jetta with the GTI engine, a forgotten car IMO and bloody cheap for what is a pretty quick car.
Not many around for £5k though.

I think she would appreciate something with a ‘sportier’ feel. Auris is the greyest of grey cars – very bland however, I have not driven one.
The IS200 is nice, I will look into those. They are huge though and we already have a vectra 150 diesel so second car ideally astra/focus size or smaller.
So far I’ve looked at CTR, Golf GTI(Mk5), Polo GTI, Focus ST, Corsa VXR… A nice safe ‘driver car’ would be best. Maybe Focus ST. I reached fiesta ST due to the amount of town driving she does. Anything with large engine and turbo power will be wasted and potentially expensive to run.
No RWD – we live in Scotland and well she is a girl. The car doesn’t need to be hugely fast, but more poke than her current car. Revvy petrol would be ideal
Swift Sport is a good call..
List So Far:
Fiesta ST facelift
Swift Sport
Twingo 133??

Well the IS200 is RWD! Although i can't really see that being a problem - you did say she was a good driver! No RWD – we live in Scotland and well she is a girl.
How about a Leon Cupra/FR - £5k budget will get a 1.8 20vT 180bhp petrol later (FR) 05 model with average miles or a earlier 04 (Cupra) 1.9 TDi PD 150 diesel.
If you don't think a turbo'd car will suffice there is also the Seat Toledo 2.3 V5 which i can also recommend and the budget will get the very best later model with low miles. It's reliable, safe, and packed with toys/leather etc. Like a mini Audi if you like.
I didn't want to put too many stipulations on my first post on this topic. We are happy with the size of her car. 4 seats minimum and anything upto a focus/golf size would be great. A nippy car rather than a massive heavy 3.0 litre because of the start/stop nature but with some fizz for A road overtaking. No rear wheel drive or convertibles(personal preference). It has to be safe too. Also, she is in her late 20s so she does want to actually like the look of her car. Plus it lets me pick a car which I will get to play in, smile, then hand back.
